Sophomore Annina Brandenburg officially reached the midpoint of her acclaimed collegiate career earlier this evening, placing 15th and receiving Second Team All-America status in the discus at the NCAA DI Track and Field Championships hosted by University of Texas. Annina's three attempts in her nationals debut measured 176-5, 174-1 and 160-7.
Moving forward she is the undisputed leader of ACU throws as the program graduated out nine performers, all of whom occupy at least one place in the Wildcats' record books – McKennon Cecil, Josh Hunter, Morgan Knight, Reagan Mabery, Kayla Melgar, Taylor Posey, Ryan Simmons, Kai Schmidt and Lonnie Smith.
Brandenburg will be a tremendous mentor and resource for the incoming student-athletes recruited by Lance Bingham and Jerrod Cook as in two short years she has set the school's discus record (186-6), while earning three medals and 41 points through four Southland Conference Championships. She also is the school's No. 2 thrower in the outdoor shot put (52-2) and fourth-ranked thrower in the javelin (150-9).
We can't wait to see what else she accomplishes this summer, and in the years to come for Abilene Christian.
Congratulations Annina. Go Wildcats!
