Sophomore Annina Brandenburg officially reached the midpoint of her acclaimed collegiate career earlier this evening, placing 15th and receiving Second Team All-America status in the discus at the NCAA DI Track and Field Championships hosted by University of Texas. Annina's three attempts in her nationals debut measured 176-5, 174-1 and 160-7.

Moving forward she is the undisputed leader of ACU throws as the program graduated out nine performers, all of whom occupy at least one place in the Wildcats' record books – McKennon Cecil, Josh Hunter, Morgan Knight, Reagan Mabery, Kayla Melgar, Taylor Posey, Ryan Simmons, Kai Schmidt and Lonnie Smith.

Brandenburg will be a tremendous mentor and resource for the incoming student-athletes recruited by Lance Bingham and Jerrod Cook as in two short years she has set the school's discus record (186-6), while earning three medals and 41 points through four Southland Conference Championships. She also is the school's No. 2 thrower in the outdoor shot put (52-2) and fourth-ranked thrower in the javelin (150-9).

We can't wait to see what else she accomplishes this summer, and in the years to come for Abilene Christian.

Congratulations Annina. Go Wildcats!

SALUTE: Yes, Kayla Melgar will go into the Wildcat history books as a Southland Conference champion, 2019 Third Team All-America, two-time regional competitor, and school record holder in the outdoor shot put. But more than that she'll be remembered as one of ACU's most beloved student-athletes.

Ahead of the wins, medals and broken records, is her unmatched energetic school spirit and a eagerness to help the Wildcats at every home contest from football to basketball.

Tonight her decorated collegiate career reached its conclusion in Austin as she placed 22nd in the shot put at the NCAA DI Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She recorded round-by-round distances of 46-10¼, 50-¾ and 48-9 in becoming the first Wildcat to compete at a DI level national championship meet in 30 years.

Thank you, Kayla for choosing ACU. God bless.

Go Wildcats!

Yes! Kayla Melgar is heading to Austin for the NCAA DI Championships in the shot put! The senior from Tempe, Ariz., broke her own school record earlier tonight in Sacramento with a toss of 16.80m (55-1.5) to place eighth of 48 competitors.

Melgar's previous best of 16.54m (54-3.25) was recorded at April's Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State.

Melgar will be joined at nationals by Annina Brandenburg (discus) and perhaps the men's 4x400-meter relay, which will compete Saturday night at 11:45 p.m CT (9:45 p.m. PT). The relay is composed of Ryan Linton, Blaze Brownlow and Jared and Avery Williams.

Annina to Austin! Congratulations to sophomore Annina Brandenburg on qualifying for the NCAA DI National Championship meet in the discus after recording a sixth-place and school-record breaking toss of 186-6 (56.86m) earlier today in Sacramento.

A native of Dusseldorf, Germany, Brandenburg broke the previous school record of 182-1 (55.51) registered by teammate Kayla Melgar at TCU in 2018. Melgar today placed 33rd of 48 discus throwers with a top throw of 161-1 (49.11m).

Brandenburg is the Wildcats' first female student-athlete to represent ACU track and field at a DI meet since high jumper Mazel Thomas in 1989, and first Wildcat discus thrower since Cliff Felkins, who won the DI (200-1) and DII discus national titles in 1987.

Ironically, finishing one place ahead of Brandenburg was Seasons Usual of Texas Tech, coached by none other than – Cliff Felkins.

The men's discus competition featuring Josh Hunter, Morgan Knight is currently underway, as is the 400m quarterfinal with sophomore Jared Williams.

Later tonight Ryan Linton competes in the first round of the 200m dash and Ryan Cleary goes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

His teammate junior Avery Williams (right) placed 42nd with a time of 47.83. During last night's field events, sophomore Megan Kirby placed 45th in the long jump (18-00.50), while senior Kayla Melgar fouled on all three of her hammer throw attempts.

Melgar, however, will compete in two additional events this weekend, throwing the discus and shot put alongside teammate Annina Brandenburg Friday (2 p.m. CT) and Saturday (7:15 p.m. CT).

The men's 400m quarterfinal is set for tonight 9:15 p.m. Today's schedule also includes the men's discus throw at 6 p.m. followed by Ryan Linton in the 200-meter dash prelims (9:55 p.m.) and Ryan Cleary in the steeplechase quarterfinals (11 p.m.).

05/22/2019

It’s with great sadness that we announce that former ACU head football coach John Payne passed away Saturday, May 18, in Willow Park, Texas. Coach Payne had just turned 86 years old on May 15.

Coach Payne was involved in football at every level from high school to college to professional for 41 years, including six seasons as the Wildcats’ head coach (1985-90), compiling a record 26-34-2 in those six seasons. His best team was in 1986 when, led by quarterback Rex Lamberti, the Wildcats finished 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the Lone Star Conference, good enough for second place in the league.

His career began as a high school coach at Tulsa Central and Tulsa McClain and took him through the collegiate and professional football ranks, including the Canadian Football League, NFL, USFL, World League and Arena League. His career included coaching in four CFL championship games. A native of Schoolton, Oklahoma, Payne played at Oklahoma State and began his coaching career at BYU in 1966. He coached in the CFL for the Edmonton Eskimos, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Toronto Argonauts, Sacramento Gold Miners, British Columbia Lions and was the final head coach in the 120-year history of the Ottawa Rough Riders. He also coached in the USFL with the Arizona Wranglers, the World League with the London Monarchs and Frankfurt Galaxy and the Arena League with the New York CityHawks.

Coach Payne was born to George Leo Payne and Elsie Lavone (nee. Davis) Payne on May 15, 1933 in Schoolton, Oklahoma.

He graduated from Wewoka High School in 1951 and received a degree in physical education from Oklahoma State University in 1955. He married Dorthy June Robinson in 1957 and they shared 61 years together making 20 cities their home, a true football family.

He leaves as his legacy four children Jenifer June Allbaugh (Jon Allbaugh), John Jeffrey Payne (Christopher Martz), Heather Payne Reynolds (Blake Reynolds) and Robinson James Payne; and seven grandchildren Jason Marvin Allbaugh, Alicia June Castleberry (Austin Castleberry), Shannon Michelle (Shelly) Lashley, Aubrey Elizabeth Taggart (Parker Taggart), Luke Robinson Lashley, Jarrod Austin Reynolds, and Brooke Lynn Reynolds. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his youngest brother Harold Gene “Pete” Payne and a large and loving extended family.

John is preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Lavone Payne, his father George Leo Payne, his sisters Nila Maxine Payne Hooper, Cora Mae Payne Anderson, his brother Paul Dean Payne, his son-in-law Jon Martin Allbaugh and his grandson Jeremy David Allbaugh.

A celebration of John’s life will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 15, 2019, at a location to be determined. Donations in memoriam can be made to The Concussion Legacy Foundation, a foundation to support athletes, veterans, and all affected by concussions and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.

This is Josh Sheehy

It's hard to believe Josh Sheehy has played his last match as a Wildcat. He was a constant presence at No. 1 singles for ACU Tennis the last four years, winning two Southland Conference team trophies, in addition a score of individual honors. He represented the Wildcats at the highest levels of collegiate tennis, competing at both the ITA Oracle Masters and ITA All-American Championships prior to this week's debut at the NCAAs. Josh certainly has raised the bar for all future Wildcats and we can't wait to see what the future holds for him. Thanks, Josh. Go Wildcats!
