We're taking advantage of this downtime to get a head start on the fall semester. This week, we installed a new 50w CO2 laser tube and optics on our Epilog Laser. While we were at it, we gave it a deep clean and realignment. The results are fantastic!

We're ready to see you all on campus soon!

Because of all the closings this spring due to COVID-19, we've had to cancel our annual Maker Fest celebration. Maker Fest has been a showcase event for us for the past five years, bringing together our entire maker community for an evening of discussions, activities, and inspiration. Since we're all staying home this year, however, we thought we might need to get creative.

We're pleased to invite you to participate in our 2020 Virtual Maker Fest. This year, we'll be sending out packets of supplies (Maker Mail) for you to make your own hand-stitched leather journal at home. This is a project we were already planning on doing with you in the lab for Maker Fest, but we think you can do it at home. We'll send you all the materials you need to make it, and provide online support and opportunities for sharing.

Maker Lab staff enjoyed being together for lunch today. We miss being around our community of makers and hope you are all staying healthy while we're apart. We can't wait until our doors are open again and our friends are back on campus. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Hello, friends. Out of an abundance of caution, the ACU Maker Lab will be temporarily closed from Wednesday, March 18 through Friday, April 10, 2020. The health and well-being of everyone in our Maker Lab community remain our highest priority. Thank you for your understanding, for your patience and for being a part of our incredible community. We look forward to seeing you all again very soon. Blessings

One of our long-time maker friends from the community, Gloria, just finished this chair. She rescued it from the dumpster and has spent several weeks restoring and painting it. Gloria has an eye for saving things that most of us overlook, and then making something awesome. Job well done.

With all the news and concerns surrounding the COVID-19 situation, we wanted to let you know how the Maker Lab is responding.

Abilene Christian University's senior leadership has planned extensively in response to global health concerns regarding the coronavirus. They have chosen to extend ACU's Spring Break through the week of March 16-20, 2020, and will move to online-only classes on our main campus from March 23 through April 9. While there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus on the ACU campus, this decision was made due to the unpredictability of the virus and its rapid spread.

During this time, the ACU Maker Lab will remain open for the following dates and times:

ACU Maker Lab
March 16-20 (M-F) 9:00am-4:00pm
March 23-27 (M-F) 9:00am-4:00pm
March 30-April 3 (M-F) 9:00am-4:00pm
April 6-April 9 (M-TR) 9:00am-4:00pm
April 10 (F) Campus Closed for Holiday

Keep in mind that these dates and times could change if the situation demands it. Of course, we'll let you know if it does. While we remain open, we ask that everyone use good judgment when visiting the Maker Lab and follow common protocols to avoid spreading sickness and keep themselves well. The health and well-being of everyone in our Maker Lab community remains our highest priority.

We ask everyone to continue to pray for those who have been impacted by COVID-19 and the medical professionals who are providing care to them. Stay safe and healthy out there.

February Art Kids Meetup

If you know of a young person (Kindergarten-5th grade) who loves to make art, they are invited to the Abilene Art Kids meetup at the Maker Lab on Saturday, February 22. Kids will be learning about and creating pointillism paintings.

This is happening on Sing Song weekend, so if you know of a young family coming from out of town, they might appreciate having something more to add to their agenda. These are really fun, hands-on events.

Big thanks to Cole Stevens for bringing in a nice donation of leather working tools. Lots of unique, vintage stamps and plenty of leather blanks; perfect for beginners to use for their first project. We'll add these to our existing collection of leather tools already in use. Come in and see what you can make.

This is the second generous donation we've received in two weeks, made by members of our Maker Lab community. We're so thankful to those who give and always encouraged by those who come in to make.

Students in Mikee Delony's ENG240 course were in this morning making Harry Potter wands. This project was so much fun to watch and was a perfect tie-in to what they'd been studying in class. Today's creativity, collaboration and problem-solving checked all the boxes for us. Way to go!

Big thanks to Ron Davis for dropping off a box of books and magazines for the Maker Lab this morning. This isn't the first generous gift he has made to the Maker Lab community. We appreciate friends like Ron who find ways to pay it forward by donating time, expertise and tools to make our space better. Come in, get inspired by these books and make something awesome!
