Today, as schools across our country are preparing to begin the year, or in many cases have already begun, we would like to take a moment to pray for our faculty and alumni that work in education. This prayer was written by our Reverend Marty CashBurless.

"O God of Wonder & Wisdom,

We pray today for Teachers who stand as the guides and guardians of knowledge!

We thank you for their willingness to answer the call to open the hearts and minds of students everywhere to the exquisite delight of forming pathways of wonder and enrichment into this universe you have created.

We cheer with you when the discovery of answers to perplexing questions brings about the growth of each individual student toward their potential.

Remind us always of the many sacrifices of our teachers as they seek to bring their best skills and talents to our students to enable them to achieve and to grow. Grant them the patience necessary for a virtual learning environment when one is needed.
Give teachers and students the safety and security in which to work and thrive. And, Lord, help all to be safe in this time of Covid-19.

Above all, give our teachers your heart of love and care with a generous helping of humor that they may at day’s end know the joy of your presence forever.

In Jesus’ name, amen."

Today was a special day in the history of McMurry University. It was, perhaps, the first time that Commencement truly looked unlike previous ceremonies. The stands and seats were bare as families and friends stayed home and tuned into a live-stream of the event. They watched their loved ones cross the stage to complete their journey as War Hawks from the comfort of their homes-- all in the month of August. It was ‘different,’ as so much of 2020 has been.

Although their senior year was anything but ordinary, the Class of 2020 persevered and did so with grace. As changes were implemented, these students adapted and adjusted. When times got tough, they showed up for one another. Even when it felt like challenges were stacked against them, they rose to the occasion, with poise.

We cannot accurately express just how proud we are of the Class of 2020. Today, we ask everyone to extend a warm congratulations to a special class of McMurry War Hawks. You did it, Class of 2020. Congratulations.

This summer, Dr. Joel Brant and his research team, “The Brant Scouts,” are characterizing the amphibian and reptile fauna at Firebase Libby. They intend to determine which species are present in the land and to estimate the population density of each one.

So far, they have encountered 14 species including Copperheads, Six-lined Racerunner’s and Couch’s Spadefoot.

Planning Fall 20 Return to Campus:

Since May 1, McMurry has been offering face-to-face classes to a small number of students with a maximum of 10 participants. Rooms are configured with the appropriate social distancing.

Beginning in May, all employees were required to complete a SafeColleges course that describes the core information related to Covid-19.

All employees and students are required to do daily symptom screenings and temperature checks and submit them via an online form — those who are exhibiting symptoms or whose temperature is 100.4 or higher as asked to stay home. If someone feels they may have been exposed to someone infected, they are asked to quarantine at home until a diagnosis is confirmed.

Beginning July 6, everyone on campus is required to wear a face-covering in the presence of others.

All guests coming to campus must follow this same protocol, including daily symptom screening, temperature check, and wearing a face covering.

In preparation for the fall semester, every classroom and gathering space has been measured for social distancing protocols to determine its maximum capacity. Rearrangement of furniture will be completed before the semester begins.

All classrooms are equipped with safety kits, including disinfecting wipes and gloves for cleaning, hand sanitizer, and disposable masks.

All faculty will be provided with face shields and will be required to wear them.

All faculty are designing each of their courses to have both a face-to-face and remote component. This dual format will allow for transition should a member of the class need to isolate or in case of government mandates regarding the size of the group.,

McMurry is planning on starting face-to-face at the regular time, August 24, 2020. Move-in times will be staggered to allow for less congestion and appropriate distancing.

McMurry will end face to face instruction the Tuesday, November 24, 2020, before Thanksgiving. The last week of instruction and the final exam period will occur remotely.

Intercollegiate athletics plans will be discussed at the American Southwest Conference president meeting scheduled to occur on Thursday, July 23, 2020. Decisions from that meeting will be communicated in a separate message.

Logistics for move-in will be communicated in August.

Sandra S. Harper, PhD
President

A Message from Dr. Harper

On June 26, 2020, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution eliminating Tipi Village as a homecoming activity.

While we appreciate the historical significance of this student activity in McMurry University’s history, McMurry must move forward, demonstrating cultural understanding and inclusion that embody the institutional values consistent with our Christian teachings.

Please take a moment to listen to Dr. Harper’s message regarding this decision.
