“Green is described as a color that gives healing energy to the heart - it’s meaning is associated with renewal, well-being, peace, and calm.

My past few years have not been those things. However, creating and enjoying art often helps bring those much needed qualities into my life. My project centers around these notions and is largely inspired by my love of certain musical subgenres. These graphics were a joy to create and hopefully serve as gentle reminders to sit back and take it easy.”

“Turquoise represents the feeling of dependability, high quality, and trustworthiness - which is why it is one of the colors I used in the design of my screen-printing store.
Screen-printing design has allowed me to take something I enjoy doing and, with lots of practice, gain experience to come out with some great quality products. I want my brand to represent all of these qualities, but I also value these traits in my own personal life as a student, mother, wife, and friend.”

“The meaning of the color orange is associated with joy, creativity, change, balance, expression, and determination.
I have enjoyed having the chance to step out of my comfort zone, experience different styles of art, and push through deadlines to produce great artwork. Through success and struggle, I have found my passion for furniture design. I want to continue making custom furniture because I enjoy the fact that no piece will be the same.”

“Purple has traditionally been a color that represents wealth, dignity, devotion, ambition, and pride. I have created a fashion brand that exhibits these qualities.
This pre-owned clothing company encourages people to go beyond the boundaries of fashion. It is important for young individuals to explore self expression and be comfortable in their own skin, loving and celebrating their bodies the way they are. I hope this brand gives people a sense of pride and encouragement.”

Lydia’s clothing brand is not only available for viewing in our gallery this April - the clothes are also for sale! Bring cash or Venmo to one of our receptions if you are interested!

“Yellow represents the sunrise on Planet Araxo, a world of my own imagination brought to life through concept art. Everything about this project reflects my journey to embrace the discomfort in the life of an artist, an international student, and a kid growing into adulthood. There is beauty in pushing through the dark of night to find the sun rising another day.”

See Felix and his work this month in the Origins show at the Ira M. Taylor Memorial gallery!

“Grid” is a painting exhibition that asks axiological questions about and around painting using ten years of work. The objects ask questions about asking questions. The objects, when seen together are attempts at casting doubt on convictions, but also casting doubt on the concept of doubt itself.

Hey y'all! Meet Victoria Angel! 👋🏼
.
Victoria is a freshman graphic design major and a fun fact about her is that she did ballet for 11 years! 👯‍♀️
.
We asked her what she loved most about art and here's what she said:
"I've always had trouble giving myself the freedom to speak my mind. I'm always scared I'll say something wrong to someone or portray my thoughts wrong. When all else fails art helps me say who I am without feeling guilty or shameful of it. Art makes me confident in who I really am." 💪🏽

Meet Professor Caleb Dulock! 👋🏼
.
Professor Dulock is the chairman of the art department and he teaches a large number of design classes such as Photoshop for Graphic Designers, Commercial Photography, 📸 and Special Topics classes like Interactive Art and Gaming Design Studio 🎮 as well as Art and Design Entreneurship!
.
His favorite piece of art is the work of industrial designer Dieter Rams (aesthetic simplicity, form to function), and the photographic work of the Parkeharrisons (emotive, theatrical, and surrealistic)
.
We asked him what advice he would give to his students and here's what he said:
"Do what you love and run hard after it." 💪🏽

Aubrie is a senior photography 📸 major who is shamelessly obsessed with coffee! ☕️ She is also the president of our honorary art fraternity Kappa Pi! We asked her what her favorite thing about art was and here's what she said:
"My favorite thing about art is being able to consistentaly learn and experiment with new and different skills to create something. I love challenging myself and trying new things that I never would have considered before."

At Senior exhibition this year I gave my students each a small container of playdoh (HSU colors) as a reminder to always stay playful and creative and then make something of it and post it to me. This one is from Ma Jinghan. #hsutxart #hsutx #playdoh
