It is with many mixed emotions that I announce that the captain of our ship, the H.S.U. Theatre, is pulling up anchor and setting sail. Yes, after a distinguished career in educational theatre, F. Larry Wheeler is retiring. Larry has devoted his life to teaching, mentoring, creating, building, and solving problems. His knowledge, humor, gentle nature, and guiding hand have shaped and influenced hundreds and hundreds of lives over the past 30+ years in the classroom. To say that he will be missed is a gross understatement. A fitting bon voyage will be planned during this coming year, and I will keep you informed. For now, please send Larry your prayers and congratulations as he charts a new course, and please share the news with our mutual friends.

Theatre Patrons: In our ongoing efforts to provide high quality arts entertainment while also keeping you and our performers safe and healthy, we are in the process of implementing several measures for the upcoming season:
-Audience capacity will likely be limited to 50%; seating/groups will be appropriately spaced.
-Seating area will be cleaned and disinfected before and after each performance.
-Patrons will be asked to wear masks upon entering the building and may be asked to wear masks during the performance.
-Patrons are asked and encouraged to reserve and pay for tickets online. There will be a limited number of tickets available for purchase at the door.
-Live streaming, in conjunction with live performance, is also being considered at this time.

We are confident that, with a few minor adjustments, we will be able to deliver a sparking and thrilling season of plays to you. We will update this information as changes and adjustments are made.

See you at the theatre!

Women Playwrights Who Won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama

In honor of March being National Women's History Month, here is some information on the first and most recent, 15th, woman recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama was Zona Gale in 1921. Gale attended the University of Wisconsin, receiving her Bachelors of Literature Degree in 1985, followed by her Masters four years later. After college, Gale wrote for various newspaper companies in Wisconsin and New York. From there, she began to write novels and plays. In 1921, her play "Miss Lulu Bett was awarded the Pulitzer prize for Drama. When Gale wasn’t writing, she was actively supporting movements to help women get equal rights and have their voices heard.

The most recent woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama was Annie Baker in 2014. Baker graduated from the Department of Dramatic Writing at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She went on to earn her Masters of Fine Arts degree in playwriting from Brooklyn College in 2009. She wrote numerous plays before receiving her Pulitzer Prize in 2014 for "The Flick". Baker continues to write and produce plays as well as teach upper level classes on playwriting.

Creative Theatre! State of art sets and designs! Traditional & new crowd pleasing shows! Excellent choreography, music, lighting and sound! Students rotate thru all aspects of a working theatre with hands on "team effort" production. It takes a crew, not just a spotlight performance to create the seamless illusion that mesmerizes an audusnce. I've never seen a "so-so" production in 5+years. Alwsys spot-on professional. Kudos to the HSU Thestre, Music, Dance Departments! Don't miss the new season.
Most of the scholarships have been posted, so please check Scholarship Central and accept your scholarship. Because scholarships are capped at full tuition costs, some of you are not eligible for theatre or Artist Scholarships because you are getting Honors Scholarships, tuition exchange, or institutional family grants. I am still working on a couple of you to see why you are not appearing as an applicant for some of our scholarships. As soon as I find out, I will make those awards.
