Exceptional engineers possess more than technical acumen, they possess a moral compass that guides their decisions and innovations.

The Ohio Northern University T.J. Smull College of Engineering has been graduating ethical engineers since the late 1800s. Now, thanks to a $50,000 Capacity-Building grant from the Educating Character Initiative, the College plans to further integrate character-building directly into its undergraduate engineering and computer science programs.

The Educating Character Initiative is a project of the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University. The Educating Character Initiative is funded by

Lilly Endowment Inc. The College of Engineering will utilize the funding for faculty retreats and collaborative discussions centered on character development, as well as mini-grants to support innovative, character-focused course enhancements.

Did you catch ONU at the Ohio State Fair? We had a great day last week at the Ohio Expo Center & State Fairgrounds introducing students to STEM. Thank you to the Ohio Department of Higher Education for the invitation to join them. And thank you to those who helped staff the booth for the college -- including JD Yoder, Laurie Laird, Craig Murray, Jim Rieman and alumni Jessica Howley and Skip Laird. It was wonderful to see so many young people interested in robotics, and to have many alumni and friends stop by our tables to chat.

Advanced technologies are revolutionizing the mobility industry. But before any groundbreaking vehicle hits the roadways, it has to survive a gauntlet of rigorous testing. That’s the wheelhouse of Taylor (Manahan) Weideling, BSME ’15.

An Ohio Northern University alumna, Weideling works at the intersection of innovation and reality. She’s the Executive Director of Services at the Transportation Research Center (TRC), North America’s largest independent automotive proving ground and vehicle testing facility.

Looking back, Weideling is grateful that ONU set her on the path to a career that’s both exciting and fulfilling. As an honors student, softball player, and resident assistant, she built leadership skills and learned how to tackle any problem.
