Ohio Northern A&D offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees with majors in studio arts, graphic design, and art education and a concentration in pre-art therapy. ONU students can pursue many careers such as design, corporate identity, advertising, wayfinding design, illustration, web design, exhibit design and curating, art therapy, art education and countless other fields. The

department holds memberships in national organizations such as the National Art Education Association, College Art Association, Foundations in Art: Theory and Education and the National Council on Education of Ceramic Arts. Faculty and/or students hold additional memberships in AIGA|The Professional Association for Design, University and College Designers Association, Kappa Pi International Art Honorary, the Ohio Art Education Association, the Mid-American Print Council, and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The department is recognized in the second and third editions of “Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers” as one of the top creative programs in the country. The department is housed in the Wilson Art Center, a state-of-the art facility with up-to-date studios, classrooms, and computer lab. The Elzay Gallery of Art and the Stambaugh Studio Theatre Gallery feature an ambitious exhibit season and visiting artist program. Each year students gain practical experiences through internships, exhibitions, student teaching, study abroad, workshops, conferences and practicums that provide hands-on learning. The department also offers students engagement in a number of student organizations, including pre-professional groups, domestic study opportunities, a film series and summer European trips. We encourage potential students, as well as art teachers, guidance counselors and parents to visit our beautiful campus. Student-led tours and individual appointments with admissions counselors, financial aid counselors and faculty are available by appointment. Oh my goodness!!! Take a look at THIS! Matt Burton in Elida BEAUTIFULLY captured the Moon over Allen County as it peaked in tonight's lunar eclipse! You can CLEARLY see Earth's shadow casted upon the moon and the reddish glow!

I do not have words- this is just simply stunning! Matt, you should frame this! Enter this into a photography competition!! Thank you so much for sharing this with me!

Bruce Chesser: A Ceramic Retrospective Exhibition

The Elzay Gallery of Art at Ohio Northern University is pleased to present Bruce Chesser: A Ceramic Retrospective. The exhibition will be on display from August 24—September 26, 2026. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. (closed Saturday and Sunday). An artist reception will take place during Homecoming Weekend, Saturday, September 26 at 9 a.m.–noon at the Elzay Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

Professor Emeritus Chesser specializes in contemporary interpretations of traditional functional ceramics. He is a retired professor of art at Ohio Northern where he taught ceramics for over 30 years. He also served as chair of the department of art & design for 12 years and served on numerous committees. Previously, he taught at Ohio University, Athens. He holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in fine arts from OU, participated in more than 100 juried, invitational and one-person art shows and served as an officer for the Ohio Designer Craftsmen. Prof. Chesser conducts workshops and lectures on salt-glazing and raku pottery.
