National recognition, industry connections and a standout student leader 👏

The University of Akron’s Gamma Iota Sigma Gamma Beta chapter recently took center stage at the organization’s 55th Annual Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. Accompanied by their faculty advisor, Latoria Hamilton, students connected with industry leaders, explored emerging trends in risk management and insurance, and celebrated an impressive year of accomplishments — including national recognition for co-president Ryan Avery.

Ryan was named GIS New Member of the Year, an honor recognizing outstanding dedication, initiative and alignment with the organization’s mission from the very beginning. The award recipient is announced at the Annual Conference and receives a $250 scholarship.

The chapter also brought home two honors: Excellent Chapter distinction for its overall performance during the 2025–2026 academic year and Chapter Achievement Award for its success in growing and strengthening membership.

Throughout the conference, students participated in educational sessions covering topics such as artificial intelligence and analytics in risk management, heard from industry leaders and connected with potential employers at a career fair featuring more than 80 companies.

Congratulations to Ryan and all of Gamma Beta on these accomplishments! Their success reflects the leadership, initiative and industry engagement at the heart of the UA Business experience.

For a group of University of Akron College of Business students, the 2026 Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium (SMIFC) Conference was an opportunity to learn, compete and connect with professionals across the finance and investment industry.

A special highlight was hearing from two University of Akron Alumni with Northeast Ohio connections. Caleb Callahan, CFP, President and Chief Operating Officer of Valmark Financial Group, delivered the presentation, “Finding Your Path,” while Bob Girton, Managing Partner of August Grace Advisory, presented “The Operator’s Seat: How Private Equity Really Creates Value.” Hearing from two alumni who have built successful careers in the industry offered a meaningful reminder of where an Akron finance education can lead.

Through sessions focused on investment analysis, the economic outlook, private equity, housing markets, AI in finance, career development and more, it provided valuable connections between classroom learning and industry practice. Leadership and faculty from the College of Business, including Dean Dr. Terry Daugherty, Dr. Eric Brisker, Dr. Mary Becker, also participated in the conference.

To cap off the trip, the group also made time to cheer on the Akron Zips Men's Soccer team to a 2-0 win over DePaul!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 Business Analytics Innovation Summit (BAIS) at The University of Akron! This year's theme,"Beyond the Pilot: Delivering AI & Analytics at Scale," brought together business leaders, technology experts, faculty, students, and alumni to explore what it really takes to move AI from promising pilots to lasting organizational impact.

Attendees heard powerful insights from leaders at Westfield Insurance, Net Health, and Avantia, Inc. on AI governance, scaling AI solutions across complex organizations, and the realities of deploying AI. The day concluded with an engaging panel discussion on the future of AI, data, and business transformation. From thought-provoking keynotes to engaging discussions and networking opportunities, BAIS 2026 showcased how organizations are turning AI potential into real-world impact.

For members of The University of Akron’s Delta Sigma Pi - Theta Kappa Chapter, building relationships with alumni has become more than a tradition — it’s part of the student experience.

That commitment recently earned the chapter Outstanding Alumni Relations at the national level, capping an impressive progression through Delta Sigma Pi’s award process. The chapter first earned five awards within its seven-chapter Steel Valley Region. Regional winners then advance to competition within their province, followed by national consideration.

“We are honored to receive this national recognition,” said Leif Fletcher, president of Akron’s Theta Kappa Chapter. “It shows our chapter’s hard work in connecting with the UA spirit and the passion our alumni have for giving back to the place that shaped them.”

At the regional level, Theta Kappa earned five of the eight available awards: R. Nelson Mitchell Outstanding Collegiate Chapter, Most Improved, Outstanding Scholastic Excellence, Outstanding Alumni Relations and District Director of the Year.
