Happy Day!

Ever wondered what an archivist does? How historical documents and photographs are preserved? Or what hidden treasures might be found in an archive?

At The University of Akron Archives and Special Collections, we work to preserve, protect, and share the stories that shape our university, community, and beyond. From historic photographs and university records to rare books and military history collections, there’s always something new to discover.

"Just what is homecoming, anyway?" A 1983 Buchtelite article questioned. While the origins aren't clear, the traditions of fun times, friends, sports, music, and more still carry on today through UA's homecoming festivities. Over the years at UA, there have been football and soccer games, dances, concerts, bonfires, alumni gatherings, marching bands, parades, fireworks, and even ox roasts, among others. In 1980, there was even a contest to decide the homecoming theme. Homecoming weekends packed a fun and full schedule for many years and continue that tradition today!

What is your favorite homecoming activity or tradition, past or present? We'd love to know if it's captured in our collections. Reach out and let us know!

Images of homecoming activities and materials are from the collections of The University of Akron Archives and Special Collections.
