Originally from Nepal, Chomolungma is pursuing her Master’s in International Affairs from Rockefeller College.

One of her favorite parts of the program? Seminar-style classes that encourage discussion and active participation.

Meet Kirsten Burke Smith, a Ph.D. student in Literacy at the University at Albany.

Drawing on her experience as a district literacy specialist, elementary school teacher, adjunct professor, and literacy leader, Kirsten’s work centers on connecting research and practice to create meaningful literacy experiences for students and teachers.

Her research interests include authentic writing, upper-elementary literacy, student motivation and engagement, and teacher professional learning.

Kirsten’s advice for fellow graduate students: “Reach out to mentors, submit the conference proposal, join an organization in your field, and engage with your peers. You are not alone in your journey.”
