In a new article, Dean Julie Novkov explores the growing debate over birthright citizenship in the U.S., a principle enshrined in the 14th Amendment. As President-elect Donald Trump and his allies push for sweeping changes to immigration policy, one of their key targets is the automatic citizenship granted to those born on U.S. soil.

Dean Novkov traces this issue's deep historical roots, highlighting significant Supreme Court rulings that have shaped America’s understanding of citizenship. Despite challenges, birthright citizenship has remained a cornerstone of American identity. But with new proposals threatening its future, the debate may soon return to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Since the earliest days of the nation, any person born on US soil is a US citizen.

Political scientist Bryan Early has been researching strategic trade controls and their role in preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction since his graduate school days. In 2012, as an assistant professor at UAlbany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, he founded the Project on International Security, Commerce and Economic Statecraft (PISCES) to focus and continue that work.

Today, Early is a full professor and the associate dean for research at Rockefeller College — and remains the director of PISCES, which over the years has received more than $25 million in grants for projects to help global partners develop strategic trade control policies.

The Project on International Security, Commerce and Economic Statecraft (PISCES), originally founded to help prevent the proliferation of missiles and nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, has expanded into protecting a whole range of newer technologies from being misused.

"Getting refugee professionals into jobs that match their skills can increase economic growth. It could even help address one of the most acute staffing shortages affecting us locally and throughout New York — medical professionals."

Read Professor Rey Koslowski's op-ed in the Times Union, which discusses the importance of aligning refugees' skills with available job opportunities to help them integrate and boost the economy.

Commentary: Helping refugees with professional experience find employment in the fields they’re trained in will benefit new arrivals and the economy.
