For Margaret Mantey ’75, Maria College arrived during a time of profound loss and became a source of compassion, opportunity, and a lifelong commitment to caring for others.
Q: What brought you to Maria College, and how did the College support you during a difficult time?
A. When I was a senior in high school, my mother passed away. It was a devastating time, but then Maria College reached out and told me they would cover my tuition. I was in disbelief, but it turned out to be the best experience of my life. Not only did they waive my tuition, but they also provided a monthly stipend as an incentive. I tried to give it back, but they refused to take it. It was such an incredibly generous gesture during a very difficult time.
Q: What was your academic experience like at Maria College?
A. I had already applied to Maria College and planned to take a chemistry course in the evenings while finishing high school. But after my mom got sick, I knew I had to be with her. Maria understood and said I could come for an extra year, which they would also pay for. I started with just electives my first year, then moved into the nursing program for my second and third years. It was challenging, but the support from Maria was invaluable. They helped me earn all the credits I needed, allowing me to complete my degree in three years.
Q: How did Maria College influence your career and life after graduation?
A. Walking onto campus for the first time, I felt great energy, but I was also quite scared. However, I quickly developed a wonderful social life and strong work ethic from the rigors of the nursing program. After graduating, I transitioned seamlessly into nursing roles at local healthcare facilities. Maria College not only provided me a lifeline during a tragic time but also set me up for a fulfilling career. I spent twenty-four years as a nurse in the Health Services Department at Bard College. I truly believe that it was the kindness given to me by Maria College that inspired me to spend most of my nursing career as a college health professional. I'm forever grateful for their compassion and support.
