of Science in Computer Engineering will integrate concepts from engineering, mathematics, computer science and physics to learn how to design, build and operate systems with integrated digital hardware and computer software components. Students develop a commitment to professional and ethical engineering standards and a devotion to life-long learning. What does a computer engineer do? Computer engineers embed computers in other machines and systems, build networks to transfer data, and develop ways to make computers faster, smaller, and more capable. The computer engineer designs, analyzes, and implements computing technology into devices and systems that use computers as components or tools. What is the difference between Computer Engineering and Computer Science? Both departments (Computer Engineering and Computer Science) are within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Computer science is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications. Computer Scientists are specialized in the realm of algorithms, software and programming. Computer scientists are scientists and mathematicians who develop ways to process, interpret, store, communicate, and secure data. Engineering applies the laws of science and mathematics to solve problems and find practical uses for scientific discoveries. In addition to understanding much of what the Computer Scientist knows, the Computer Engineer is knowledgeable about hardware functionality at the circuit component level, as well as system integration between computer and network. What are the job opportunities? Computer engineers are highly sought after for careers in industry, government, and academia and command among the highest starting salaries for any BS degree! Their academic preparation arms them with a highly flexible set of technical skills and adaptive problem solving abilities. Because their background spans hardware, software, and complex systems, industries in communications systems, high speed and embedded computing, computer hardware and software design all compete for computer engineering graduates. Graduates also find careers in a variety of public and private organizations, while those who pursue graduate studies may choose academic and/or research careers. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists software engineer as the #3 best job of 2013, with a 30% growth and an average salary of $90,530.
