Tau Kappa Epsilon - Omega Chapter at Albion College

Tau Kappa Epsilon - Omega Chapter at Albion College We honor the unique contributions of each individual member. We are strengthened by our diversity of background, experience, and belief. We are united by our shared values and common purpose.
Omega Chapter at Albion College is one of the oldest and most distinguished chapters of Tau Kappa Epsilon. The group has initiated over 1,800 men and earned countless awards and accolades in more than nine decades of continuous operation. Our members have distinguished themselves in their careers and contributions to the community, including two past presidents of Albion College and many members of the faculty and the Board of Trustees.

The Omega Chapter of TKE is more than just a house on Albion's campus. It is the Fraternity for Life − a family that includes over 1,200 living collegiate and alumni members. Omega TKE is committed to exemplifying the values of Love, Charity and Esteem on campus at Albion and around the world. The “flagship” of TKE's Great Lakes Province, Omega celebrated 90 years of continuous operation in January 2017, and was recognized as a Top TKE Chapter by the international fraternity in 2018 and 2019. Albion College has confirmed that no significant changes will be made to fraternity food service arrangements this fall. That means that Dawn Morgan will continue as our cook and "house mom."

This would not have been possible without the advocacy of our members, peers, family, and friends, for which we are very grateful. We look forward to engaging further with the college to address this and other important issues facing the fraternity & sorority community at Albion.

Perseverance is woven into the fiber of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Along with the rest of the Albion College community, our chapter is taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We also welcomed nine new initiates to our bond last weekend and thanked our amazing seniors for all they have done.

Things are changing in unexpected ways, but this is not goodbye. Until we meet again, stay safe and be well.

An Open Letter to the Albion College Community

February 24, 2020

Dear Britons:

As you may be aware, Albion College has decreed that as of the Fall 2020 semester, fraternities at Albion may no longer offer their own student meal plans. Under the new mandate, fraternity members would instead be required to eat at Baldwin Hall and pay for meal plans provided by Bon Appétit Management, the for-profit vendor that operates the college’s dining and hospitality services.

The Board of Trustees reportedly adopted this policy in October 2019, but it was not disclosed to fraternity presidents until after final exams in December. The decision was made without consulting fraternity members, volunteer advisors, national governing bodies, or the college’s own student development professionals.

Since 1966, the six men’s social fraternities at Albion have lived in cooperative, on-campus housing built expressly for that purpose by the college and financed in part by fraternity alumni. As part of their agreement with the college, the fraternities operate independent kitchens in their houses to provide members’ meals.

For decades, fraternities have made their own decisions regarding staffing, supplies, and meal planning. Fraternity food service costs are paid directly by student members; there is no expense to the college beyond its obligation to maintain the physical plant. This arrangement has given fraternity members valuable communal meal time, offered experience in management, allowed flexibility for special events, and provided a competitive advantage in recruiting new members.

The college’s unprecedented unilateral act was all the more shocking in the context of this long standing relationship. Multiple inconsistent and conflicting reasons have been offered for the abrupt policy change, but no hard data has been provided in support of it. Additionally, no justification has been given for circumventing the process the college itself established for making significant changes to its relationship with the fraternities.

The benefits of this dramatic upheaval are uncertain and ill-defined at best, but the harm to the fraternal organizations, their members, and their employees is clear. In addition to diminishing the uniqueness and desirability of fraternity living, this plan will increase the cost of membership. It will lead to higher costs for fundraising and recruitment events. Most egregiously, it will require some chapters to terminate the employment of their cooks. The emotional and financial impact of severing these relationships will be devastating to students and employees alike.

It is now plain to all that this process was handled poorly from the beginning. Recently, the administration has made efforts to engage in dialogue with student and alumni leaders about possible alternative solutions. This is a positive step, but it must continue with a full good-faith commitment to collaboratively resolving legitimate issues regarding fraternity food service.

Therefore we, the undergraduate and alumni members of Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Nu, Sigma Chi, and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternities at Albion College, call upon the Board of Trustees to reverse its misguided decision and reaffirm the status quo arrangement for fraternity meal plans in the 2020-21 school year.

We further insist that the administration continue engaging our undergraduate and alumni leaders in the consultative process set forth in the Statement of Relationship to study future food service options and resolve concerns in a transparent manner that is consistent with the values of the college.

Finally, we encourage all alumni, parents, donors, and friends of the college to carefully consider their ongoing support of the institution and advocate for a respectful, fair, open, and cooperative process involving all stakeholders affected by these decisions.

Respectfully,

Omega was recognized with Chapter Excellence awards in 2016 and 2017. Now, the 2018 Top TKE award will join the 1962, 1963, and 1965 Top TKE plaques in the chapter trophy case.

Congratulations to all of this year's award winners!

Welcome!

The Omega Chapter of TKE is more than just a house on Albion's campus. We are the Fraternity for Life − a family that includes over 1,200 living collegiate and alumni members. We are committed to exemplifying our values of Love, Charity and Esteem on campus at Albion and around the world. The “flagship” of TKE's Great Lakes Province, Omega celebrated 90 years of continuous operation in January 2017, and was recognized as a Top TKE Chapter by the international fraternity in 2018 and 2019.

As thinking, inclusive student leaders, Tau Kappa Epsilon welcomes young men from all walks of life. The Fraternity has never excluded prospective members from our brotherhood based on race, religion, or social class; such discrimination is antithetical to our values. Our Declaration of Principles, ritual ceremonies and traditions speak directly to this point: TKE regards men not for their wealth, rank, or honor, but for personal worth and character. Among the many benefits available to students who join the chapter are scholarships funded entirely by donations from alumni and friends. This includes an endowed scholarship created by the late William C. Prout, Jr. (Ω575, ‘59) and one honoring the ninth president of Albion College, Dr. John L. Seaton (Ω210). Donations to the Omega Chapter scholarship fund are tax-deductible and can be made online through the TKE Foundation. The fraternity provides many educational, leadership, and service opportunities to its members. At the local level, this takes the form of responsibilites given to officers and committes ranging from organizing intramural sports to planning service events to managing a six-figure annual budget. The International fraternity also offers a range of developmental programs and events designed to build better men for a better world. We welcome you − student, alumnus, family, or friend − to learn more about us and visit our home at 1004 E. Porter Street in Albion.
