Concentration: Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service

“Go big or go home” is the mantra Shreeya lives by. Meet our Global Ambassador: Namara Rose Swillum
Hometown: Tinley Park, IL, USA
School Year: Sophomore
Majors & Minors: International Studies (concentration in Africa) and Asian Cultural Studies with a minor in French!

“Namara is a sophomore who had no intentions of coming to Albion. She applied to Albion “on a whim” but fell in love with the architecture and vision of the school the moment she landed on campus. She has found Albion as a place where she can dream big and stay on track to achieve those dreams with the support of her professors. Her dream is to be a globally certified English language teacher before joining the foreign service while her short term goals usually involve micro planning her life. She admits to being a little attached to her bed, but the beauty of the trails in the Nature Center have convinced her to get out and explore. Namara can be found at the coffee shop downtown with her friends if she’s not busy drawing, reading or writing!”

Meet our Global Ambassador: Veren Aben
Hometown: Jos, Nigeria
School Year: Junior
Major: Philosophy and Political Science with a minor in Public Policy
Veren is known as V around campus. Some would describe her as unconventional. She chose Albion over her parents’ alma mater because she knew that she would be able to create long lasting relationships with a tight knit group of people at Albion. She is naturally friendly and has been able to build that network by leading Bible studies, as a Briton Path Coach or simply making friends while walking to her dorm.
Her long term goal is to be the Minister of Education in Nigeria while her short term goal is to study abroad next year either in Ghana or London. She’s currently busy applying for studying abroad at the London School of Economics and Political Science!

Meet our Global Ambassador: Troy Mac
Major(s): History and International Studies
Minor(s): German
Graduation Year: 2021
Hometown: Macomb, Michigan
Troy is a Sophomore studying History and International Studies. Another Michigan native, Troy came to Albion College because he was attracted to the small size of the classes. He looks back on his time at the college fondly. In particular, he enjoys taking a class with Midori Yoshi, a Professor in the International Studies Department, on the historic significance of the Cold War. He also enjoys taking classes in German with Professor Perry Myers, who he met through the FYE program. In light of these relationships, Troy claims that his short-term goal is to stay on the Dean’s List and that his long-term goal is to attend graduate school. Next year, he will be studying abroad in Germany with his friends. We are looking forward to seeing the photos!

Major(s): International Studies
Minor(s): Marketing
Graduation Year: 2021
Hometown: Allen Park, Michigan
Antonio is a sophomore studying International Studies at Albion College. A Michigan native, Antonio found out early that Albion gives him the opportunity to apply his studies to address real-world problems. With Dr. Matt Schoene, an assistant professor in the Anthropology department, Antonio and his classmates traveled to Rome, Italy, to learn about the European integration. When Antonio is not traveling to new places or studying in the Stockwell-Mudd Library, he enjoys playing (American) football for Albion and spending time with the brothers of Alpha Tau Omega. As he said about these experiences, “[they] made me feel like I have a second home, and I’m basically living with a bunch of my brothers”.

Meet our Global Ambassador: Tanya Jagdish
Major(s): Biology
Minor(s): Mathematics
Graduation Year: 2022
Hometown: Bangalore, India
Tanya is a freshman studying Biology and Mathematics at Albion College. Originally from Bangalore, India, Tanya came to Albion because she wanted a chance to conduct undergraduate research in Biology. Soon, she was pleasantly surprised to learn about everything she could do around campus. She found work as a Student Research Partner with Dr. Dale Kennedy where she monitors audio recordings of the House Wren. When she is not working with Dr. Kennedy, she still has time to enjoy herself around campus. Tanya holds leadership positions in International Student Union and Asian Awareness Group and enjoys her experiences with faculty in the Chemistry Department. She says that her favorite memory from this semester was when her Chemistry Professor, and his family, came to her class dressed up for Halloween. Then they had a competition to see who had the best costume and she won!

Albion College

Dr. James Wilson, '77, took his message for transforming pre-medical education to his hometown of Grosse Pointe on January 24. More than 300 people heard that message between his high school visits at Grosse Pointe South (his old high school) and Gross Pointe North as well as at the War Memorial.

Last fall, a gift from Jim and his wife, Lisa Wilson, '79, established the Lisa and James Wilson Institute for Medicine at Albion College. The Institute is empowering faculty across several academic disciplines to educate the doctors and health professionals of tomorrow in ways the coming decades will demand.

Stirling Books and Brew

Looking for a quiet place to study or a chill hangout spot downtown? Look no further! Stirling Books and Brew is a popular yet quiet coffee shop located just down the street from the Ludington Center in downtown Albion. The coffee shop, which also doubles as a bookstore, is new to town, having just opened in July of 2017. Stirling Brooks and Brew capitalizes on the small-town feel that Albion has, offering a relaxing environment where people can get together and chat over a cup of coffee. The coffee shop section serves a number of drinks, from lattes to bubble tea. But it’s more than just a coffee shop. Besides selling interesting books on hundreds of different topics (and if they don’t have the book you’re looking for, they’ll order it for you), they offer a number of activities throughout the week, including trivia nights, book signings and discussions, live music performances, painting parties, and more! They also have an event called midnight pancakes where faculty and staff from the college make pancakes for the students during finals week! Stirling Books and Brew has started to become a place where people from both the college and community come to hangout.

The Bohm Theatre

The Bohm is a newly renovated movie theatre located in downtown Albion, just a few short minutes away from the center of campus. Albion College students are able to watch any and all movies for free at the Bohm just by presenting their student ID at the ticket counter. The Bohm shows movies from Thursday till Sunday, ranging from new releases to timeless classics. Albion College also teams with the Bohm to allow students to view the premiers for new movies at the theatre as well.

Other events are also held at the Bohm, including concerts, guest speakers, and themed programs such as “Celebrating French Cinema”, a program in which French films are shown at the Bohm for about a month every year. The Bohm is a great place to meet with friends, enjoy a film on a lazy saturday, or engage with prominent speakers from across the country. Whatever the occasion, the Bohm is the place to be!
