What can stories about Black girlhood teach us about identity, culture, and the world? 📚

Ashanti McKnight ’28 is finding out. Her project, “Reading Black Girls: Building ‘The Black Girl Atlas,’” studies four Black women authors and how their writing speaks across generations about identity, lived experience, and struggle. Writers do more than tell stories — they’re historians, sociologists, and interpreters of the world. The Black Girl Atlas is a platform Ashanti is building to archive Black authors’ stories and explore how their experiences connect to global issues. An English and international studies major from Hudsonville, Mich., Ashanti developed her research with faculty sponsor Jess Roberts.

Presented at the 2026 Elkin R. Isaac Research Symposium, Ashanti’s work is a reminder of what stories, and Albion College students, can do. Learn more about student research and the Albion College experience at albion.edu/elkin. 📖

Albion College students didn’t just build software—they deployed it, tested it, and learned from the people who will use it. 🪖

An Albion College Community Collaborative (AC3) student team led by Professor Vicki Baker worked with Black & Rossi (founded by Albion alum Col. Bill Black ‘82), developed a web application called CROS to assist with military resource management. Recently, their journey took them from the classroom to Northern Strike 2026, a U.S. Army training exercise, where student leaders Arnold Waigwa ‘26 and Nathan Penfield ‘28 conducted live trials and demonstrations with uniformed personnel. The team traveled to Camp Grayling and conducted live demonstrations with soldiers and military officials, gathering feedback that will inform future development. 📈

Real-world application, real feedback, real responsibility. It’s hands-on learning that builds confidence, professional judgment, and skills that textbooks can’t teach. 🫡

From the ashes of a building fire arose Kresge Gymnasium — built in 1925 with a $100,000 gift from S.S. Kresge in honor of his son, Stanley Kresge '23, and the building that first shaped what we now know as the Quad. A century later, Kresge is still at the heart of campus. This year, Kresge marks 100 years with a major renovation: new locker rooms, a refreshed lobby, new bleachers and more thanks to a $1 million gift from Joe '82 and Julie Serra and generations of Brits who gave to keep it thriving.

Take a look back at how one dramatic night in 1922 sparked collective action and a century of legacy! 🕯️
