The Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC) at The University of New Mexico is offering its Community English Course this Fall 2026 for adult learners who want to strengthen their English skills for everyday life in New Mexico. This 6-week, in-person course is designed for low-intermediate to intermediate learners and focuses on building practical communication skills.

Participants will work on English conversation, grammar, reading, and writing in a supportive classroom environment led by experienced CELAC instructors. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m., beginning October 27 and ending December 3, on the UNM campus.

The course fee is $195, which includes all course materials and registration. UNM employees may enroll for free with tuition remission, making this an excellent professional development opportunity. 

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from The University of New Mexico.

Enrollment is open now, and space is limited. The deadline for enrollment and payment is October 20, 2026.

No: Make the Admissions table your first stop.
Yes: Make your way to a Registrars table! They will enter a PIN so you will have early access to registration. Stop to visit department tables and grab some snacks on your way.

Staff who are unable to attend the event should use their .edu email account to message [email protected]. The email should include the staff member’s name, term for which they wish to register for, and their UNM ID. Staff who attend Staff as Students in person will be the first to get their overrides; those who email will receive their overrides after the in-person event.

Outstanding Supervisor Award 2026-Nominations Now Open!

The Outstanding Supervisor Award was established in 2015 through a partnership between UNM Staff Council and the Offices of the President, Provost, and Chancellor for Health Sciences. The award was created to recognize supervisors who demonstrate strong leadership and support their employees.
In 2019, the award was renewed with additional support from the Office of the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration. Each participating office contributes $1,000 annually to support the award.
Today, two supervisors are recognized each year for their leadership and commitment to creating a positive workplace that supports work-life balance, professional development, and the values and mission of UNM. Each recipient receives a plaque and a $1,000 cash award.

Award Details
A minimum of 2 awards are presented annually.
Each recipient receives a monetary award and a commemorative plaque.
Awards are presented at a public ceremony in October

Eligibility & Selection Process
Each fall, faculty, staff, and students from across UNM, including its branch campuses, can nominate a supervisor for the award.
Receipt of nomination forms will be confirmed via email.
The Staff Council Rewards & Recognition Committee reviews submissions and forwards recommendations to the Staff Council Executive Committee. Final award selections made by the Rewards and Recognition Committee

The University of New Mexico is launching its annual Culture of Safety survey, starting Monday, September 14, 2026.

Since 2023, UNM Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) has sent the survey to audit working conditions in labs, facilities areas and other zones, as part of efforts to direct improvements to safety equipment, policies and training across campus.

“Every day, thousands of us work in labs, classrooms, offices, and facilities across UNM. Everyone deserves to go home healthy and uninjured at the end of each workday,” said Casey Hall, director of UNM EHS. “Staff feedback is always critical to improving campus safety.”

The survey will be available for two weeks through Sept. 27. Links to English and Spanish surveys are provided below.

The University of New Mexico is now accepting nominations for 2027 Honorary Degree recipients.

Honorary degrees are typically awarded to honor and recognize individuals’ contributions to a specific field or to society in general. Strong candidates are eminent individuals and scholars whose contributions are of general significance and transcend geographical limitations.

A successful nominee must have an exemplary record of academic or public accomplishment in keeping with the University’s standards of rigor, quality, and significance. Honorary degrees are awarded at spring commencement.

The nominations should be sent to the Office of the University Secretary, Scholes Hall, Room 103 or [email protected], no later than Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, at 5 p.m. The Honorary Degree Policy and a listing of past honorary degree recipients is available on University Secretary’s website https://secretary.unm.edu/awards/honorary_degrees .
