The Engineering Student Success Center and the Center for Water and the Environment received the Students' Choice Award at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico Discovery Festival last month. The School of Engineering table featured several engaging displays and experiments ranging from a Lobo Launch rocket to an insta-worm demo illustrating polymer chemistry, and even an interactive floodplain simulator.

Congratulations to the SoE students and staff who put the exhibit together and thank you for inspiring young learners with a love for all things STEM!

Professor Meeko Oishi from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering delivered a distinguished lecture to the National Science Foundation Directorate for Engineering last week. Her talk was titled, "Human-in-the-loop systems with nonideal humans: Towards stochastic, heterogeneous modeling and control." It explored her research on the challenges that arise from human interaction with autonomous dynamic systems and the need for new methods and tools to address those challenges.

The NSF's Directorate for Engineering invests in engineering approaches and research infrastructure that address national challenges. The group, which has expertise across all engineering disciplines, is made up of federal employees, as well as scientists and engineers from a wide range of research institutions serving in temporary positions.

Earlier this week, the School of Engineering hosted an exciting presentation by Akilah Martinez all about XR technology and Indigenous-based circular economic ecosystems through art, emerging tech, language and culture revitalization and success consciousness. Akilah’s use of art and XR technology to empower Indigenous communities is truly groundbreaking and we can’t wait to see what this UNM alumna does next!

The discussion was an exciting second installment in the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series powered by SoE alumnus Doug Campbell and supported by the Leaders of Enchantment podcast! Each lecture features discussions centered on innovation and entrepreneurship.
