WHAT A DAY!

Last Friday, the UNM College of Education & Human Sciences welcomed high school students from across New Mexico for NM | UNM Education Day.

Students spent the day exploring opportunities in education, connecting with future classmates and colleagues, meeting members of the COEHS community and getting a glimpse of what their own futures could look like at UNM.

A special thank you to New Mexico Educators Rising for partnering with us to bring these future educators together, and to all of the students, educators, advisers, volunteers and partners who brought their energy, curiosity and enthusiasm to campus. We loved having you here and hope to see many of you back as future Lobos!

Take a look through some of our favorite moments from the day.

A message for New Mexico, reaching readers across New Mexico.
An op-ed from UNM College of Education & Human Sciences Dean Kristopher M. Goodrich appeared in the Sunday editions of both the Albuquerque Journal and Santa Fe New Mexican.
In the piece, Goodrich shares his perspective on the critical role educator preparation plays in New Mexico and the responsibility we share in strengthening the future of education across our state.
We’re proud to see this important conversation reaching readers across New Mexico through two of the state’s leading newspapers.

EMPOWER EDUCATION TODAY

Every COEHS student arrives with potential and a path all their own. Scholarships, mentorship, hands-on learning and professional experiences can help turn that potential into opportunity, preparing educators and professionals who will serve communities throughout New Mexico.

Through Accelerate New Mexico, we can invest in more of those opportunities and help more students move from learning here to making a difference across our state.

Be the Reason opportunity becomes possibility.

WELCOME FALL!
When does autumn actually begin? It depends on whom you ask.
Today marks the autumnal equinox and the beginning of astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox occurs when the Sun crosses Earth’s equator, giving us nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness.
But did you know there’s another first day of autumn?
Meteorologists mark the beginning of fall on Sept. 1. Rather than following Earth’s position relative to the Sun, meteorological seasons divide the calendar into four consistent three-month periods. That makes it easier for scientists to collect, compare and study weather and climate data from year to year.
Astronomical autumn, meanwhile, has been tied to the equinox for centuries. Even the word “equinox” gives us a lesson: it comes from the Latin words aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, meaning “night.”
So whether autumn began for you on Sept. 1 or begins with today’s equinox, both answers have a little science behind them.
And we think that’s a pretty good lesson for the first day of fall: sometimes the answer depends on how you ask the question.
Happy autumn from the UNM College of Education & Human Sciences!

BECOMING A TEACHER IS A JOURNEY. E3 GIVES YOU A COMMUNITY FOR THE TRIP.

E3 scholars don't simply enroll in a master's program. They become part of a cohort of future special educators learning and growing together.
The two-year program combines online and in-person learning with faculty and peer mentoring, late afternoon and evening classes, and both part-time and full-time enrollment across fall, spring and summer semesters.

And E3 scholars receive funding for tuition and fees along with additional professional and academic supports.

Learn together. Grow together. Prepare to make a difference together.

Applications for the 2027 E3 cohort are open through Oct. 31.

HAVE A BACHELOR'S DEGREE? HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT TEACHING?

Your path to the classroom doesn't have to begin with an undergraduate degree in education.
UNM's E3 program is designed to prepare new special education teachers through a fully funded, two-year M.A. in Special Education.
If you meet the program's admission requirements, and are ready to build a career supporting students with disabilities, E3 could be your next step.

Bring what you already know. We'll help you learn how to teach.

Applications for the 2027 E3 cohort are open now. Apply by Oct. 31.
