This Semester in Intro Kiln Procedures and Construction class, Shawn Murrey has been working closely with students on building a brand new gas kiln for our indoor Kiln room. Students attend lectures every week and then apply themselves and get hands on experience with building a functional Kiln with safety in mind. This Kiln is constructed and designed with the idea that students will be able to fire this gas kiln to test out different ceramic materials, clays, glazes and help further their research.

Assistant Professor of Ceramic Art Nicki Green’s junior Sculpture I class had critique today for their project “Objects to Sit On” in which students were prompted to think critically and expansively about scale, anatomy and weight bearing forms. Congrats everyone on such a generative project!

Earlier in October, the Junior Pottery class organized a firing in our train kiln. Leading the class of 15 students was their professor Linda Sikora, their Teaching Assistant Marita Manson, 1st year grad student GH Wood, post-bacc Ben Deutsch, and Matt Kelleher. Also joining the group were several senior and graduate students. It was a studio wide event.

For many, this was their first time firing a wood kiln. It is a long process that requires teamwork: splitting and stacking wood, loading, firing, unloading, and clean up. This firing was 50 hours long that included preheating with a campfire, transitioning the firing up into the firebox, side stocking, racking coals, reading cones, and learning to call stoke cycles. There are a lot a jobs and it takes many firings to experience each phase of the process.

The results were very positive. A variety of color throughout the kiln. Now, there are many pots to clean.
