Day in My Life Series: Join Zhamila at the SoCal Writing Center Association Conference!

Zhamila just graduated this May, but as a student, she was involved with many opportunities on campus, including working at the Writing Center as a student fellow. As a writing fellow, she not only tutored her peers on their writing but also worked on her own projects! Not only an attendee, she presented her topic: "The Value of Human-Centric Writing in the Age of AI" as part of a presentation panel on AI.

Why I loved working at the Office of International Students Services:
“As an international student myself, it was incredibly fulfilling to contribute to the efforts that allow students from around the world to be a part of the SUA community. My interactions with peers and friends from different backgrounds made my 4 years a whole lot more stimulating and memorable. The diversity we have is what makes SUA, SUA."

"I also loved being a part of the Founders 2nd floor community, where a number of offices that uphold the SUA campus exist. Chatting and doing morning stretches with admissions counsellors, peace ambassadors, and other staff and student workers always made my day. I hope that every workplace I end up in the future is as warm as this one🩷”

Third up for Senior Spotlight: Valentina ✨

Favorite Memory at the Office:
"My favorite memory as a peace ambassador has to be the Experience Soka Talent Blast! It’s really hard to pick a favorite year, but I will highlight our latest one for the class of 2030. Minami, Yumiko, and I worked tirelessly for weeks to make the show enjoyable for the performers and entertaining for the audience, so when our project finally came together we were overjoyed and could not stop dancing in the bleachers! There is nothing quite like seeing a new class watching their future upperclassmen perform in awe, you can see their future choices shining in their eyes."

Why You Chose to Stay at Soka:
"A question Chelsea asked us often was “why are you still at Soka?” As in, every year we go back home (in my case, back to Brazil) and choose to come back. Why? To me, that is the most important part of choosing Soka. I had plenty of reasons to come in the first place—-great financial aid, small class sizes, study abroad opportunity, big international population—-but those are not the reasons why I stayed. I chose to stay because I love the community we created together during our years at SUA. I love learning words in different languages in the caf, having karaoke parties in the racquetball courts, and playing Super Mario in the dorms. I love walking the awkward path and making silly faces at my friends when I saw them coming my way. I love seeing the deer outside my dorm and wearing pink every Wednesday with the Enrollment Services team. It’s a joy to be at Soka, and I will miss it dearly."

Second up for Senior Spotlight: Bidisha✨

Favorite Memory at the Office:
"I have always loved my time at the office and working with my team. Since we spend so much time together in our shared cubicle, my work friends and I decorated it with memes and pictures to make the space feel more personal and reflective of us. I have always loved my office because of the people in it, but now I love the space just as much."

After Soka Plans:
"Upcoming fall, I will be starting my MS in Public Policy and Management (MSPPM) at Carnegie Mellon University. I am excited for learning how policies can uplift communities while gaining tangible skills to serve in projects for social impact."

Congrats to our Office of Enrollment Services student workers who graduated with the Class of 2026 🥳

We'd like to spotlight some of our student workers to share more about their journey and future!

First up: Raven ✨

Favorite Memory as a Peace Ambassador:
"I love it when I can see a student's eyes light up while on a tour. It's really special to be a part of their journey in discovering SUA, watching them fall in love with the campus and our mission before they even apply. While I don't remember every part of my first time touring campus, I remember how it made me feel."

After Soka Plans:
"This fall, I will be attending Columbia University for my Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology. Before SUA, I had never thought about public health before, but the interdisciplinary education allowed me to explore aspects of human and planetary health, something I would like to continue to study in New York!"
