Fall 2018 President: Natasha Stewart Vice President: Brooklynn Lipponen Advisor: Andrea Mukavetz, Erica Bringedahl Weekly student meetings: TBD

We are a Registered Student Organization at Grand Valley State University. We are dedicated to promoting Native American/Indigenous cultural awareness across the Allendale campus and surrounding community, as well as bringing attention to important broader Native American social issues. We are proud to have a diverse membership of both Native American and non-Native students. Our organization is open to both undergrad and graduate students as well as GVSU faculty/staff.

Mission: The Grand Valley Native American Student Association exists to engage the campus and Greater Grand Rapids community by providing programs that share and educate others about the Native American culture. We wish to provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere in which students, faculty, staff, and visitors may convene to discuss traditions, beliefs, and viewpoints and to give Native American students a voice and a presence on the GVSU campus.

"For an assignment, we were given the task of choosing either an organization or movement to promote. I chose to promote the Protect Our Sisters movement in honor of the Murdered and Missing Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people. People do this around the country, so I can't take credit for the red hand prints. I put it up here to remind people that not everyone has the privilege of getting the same kind of attention and support from law enforcement whom should be responsible in searching for lost or murdered women. I did research to accompany the banner to highlight that Native women are disproportionately murdered and experiencing domestic violence at higher rates than the national average."

Hi! I am a public health student at GVSU and I'm working on my thesis project on improving resources and education on breast cancer in young Native American women across the U.S. The goal of Kwe Brave (in collaboration with the Inter Tribal Council of Michigan) is to provide a network of breast cancer survivors and increase awareness. Please share/follow if you or anyone you know can benefit from this campaign! https://www.facebook.com/KweBrave/?__tn__=%2Cd%2CP-R&eid=ARApTDcOwz8c8qJb2WrvQLBHT1BQ9Y_UiZOoVJWKTsZhl1QFk_m6M1a_QEs64TFKq-w-qHmf_OzCKNyI

Call for Papers - Please share! Students (undergraduate and graduate) are encouraged to submit abstracts. https://cslc.nd.edu/research/conferences-and-symposiums/lets-talk/spring-2018/ In Our Own Words: Native Language Revival and Preservation in the Indigenous Americas March 23rd and 24th 2018 McKenna Hall University of Notre Dame Call for Papers The Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures at the University of Notre Dame invites abstracts on Native American efforts to find a voice in perhaps the most appropriate place: their own native languages. Activism and organizing efforts are empowering Native communities to recapture their ways of living and knowing, and to recapture their cultural inheritance. Programs have sprung up to both rescue and revive languages on the brink of extinction. These efforts promote dialogue and commit to the building of cordial, collaborative relationships among tribal members and outside communities. The Let’s Talk 2018 conference taps into and expands the spirit of the mutual desire for friendly and productive partnerships. This conference will highlight efforts across the United States and in the Indigenous Americas to reclaim native tongues and, at the same time, allow for exploration of issues tied to them, such as notions of identity and community, the role of academia within traditional community structures, changing language, and indigenous activism. The organizers of this conference strongly encourage submissions from scholars, educators, community members, and administrators in addition to emerging scholars for the undergraduate and graduate student panels. Potential paper topics include but are not limited to: • Innovations and best practices among tribal language-learning programs • Model programs and their successes in the North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean • Integrating language and culture in traditional and modern settings • Language, accessibility and translation services in specific situations (justice, health, education) • Imagining indigenous language and cultural presence in the future • Re-imagining “study-abroad” and cultural immersion - opening doors between nations • Building partnerships between universities/colleges and indigenous language communities • Providing indigenous language instruction in elementary and middle schools through community engagement • Indigenous language focus and the empowerment of minority cultures in the community Abstracts should be 250-300 words and submitted by February 9, 2018. Submission Portal For more information, please contact: Andrea Topash-Rios, Associate Teaching Professor ([email protected]) Department of Romances Languages and Literatures Elena Mangione-Lora, Associate Teaching Professor ([email protected]) Department of Romances Languages and Literatures Brian Collier, Director of the American Indian Catholic Schools Network and Coordinator of Supervision for the Alliance for Catholic Education ([email protected])
