Why SLG: From the day I first met the womxn of SLG, I felt a sense of family and they made me feel welcomed. The principles of SLG aligned perfectly to the principles I believe in. I loved the support system of strong and empowered women who empowered other women. Being a person of color in a predominantly white college, I was fascinated by the diversity of SLG. It was one of my best decisions in life thus far. πŸ’–

Favorite Quote: β€œIn a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

Fun facts!
I have a goal of traveling to all 50 states and Hawaii. So far I’ve traveled to 16 states.
My favorite drink is an Horchata.
I can create ceramic pottery.

Repost β€’ @sigmalambdagamma β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”
Today marks the 50th anniversary of Pride month. As a diverse organization committed to inclusivity and empowerment, we want to express our support and commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and our members.

The first Pride in the United States was a riot that started at the Stonewall Inn bar in Greenwich Village, in June of 1969. This riot started after trans people of color, specifically Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Stormé DeLarverie fought back against the police who were raiding the bar and brutalizing the LGBTQ+ patrons.
To this day, that night is depicted in media, a statue outside the bar, and is included in mainstream history as a night led by white cisgender gay and lesbians. Unfortunately, this is another example of white supremacy at work in all marginalized communities to erase the contributions of people of color. We cannot celebrate Pride without acknowledging them and taking action against racism and police brutality that is continuing to kill people of color. It is the queer and trans, black, indigenous, people of color (QTBIPOC) communities who experience the most violence in the LGBTQ+ community.

We must demand better from our elected officials and reject harmful anti-black, anti-transgender, and homophobic legislation. 2020 has already seen at least 12 transgender and gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by other violent means. This epidemic of racism, homophobia, and transphobia that disproportionately targets transgender people of color must cease.
Sigma Lambda Gamma is committed to acting in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ siblings and will continue to center, listen, and uphold our QTBIPOC member's voices and experiences. Read our full memo linked in our bio.

BLACK LIVES MATTER!! β€’ @sigmalambdagamma β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”
On May 8th, 2020, we firmly stood in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, and with deep sorrow, we are moved to reaffirm this proclamation less than four weeks later. This does not imply that solely three Black people were unjustly murdered in any month, rather that we recognize three recently documented cases that garnered national attention. The murders of Ahmaud Arbery (mentioned in SLG β€œOpen Memo in Light of Recent Events”, May 8th), Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd are sobering examples of the multitude of Black people whose mistreatments are not publicly documented every year. Sigma Lambda Gamma recognizes the complexity of issues in our communities and the justice system. We stand against the racial disparity of treatment in the United States justice system. We condemn the subhuman treatment and demonstrated acts of aggression towards the Black community. As an organization dedicated to empowerment, we call on our civic leaders to demand changes to our justice system. Please read our full memo linked in our bio, to read more on our stance and call-to-action for all of our membership.

Repost @wolverinegammas β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”
It is time to stand alongside our Black brothers and sisters in these terrifying times. The lives of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaub Arbery, George Floyd, Regis Korchinksi-Paquet, and Tony McDade are valuable and deserving of justice. The Black citizens of the world shouldn’t have to fight the battle of racism alongside protecting themselves and their families from COVID-19.
To who are unable or feeling apprehensive about protesting in nearby cities due to health or safety concerns there are other methods of support you can participate in. β€’ Text β€œFLOYD” to 55156 to bring the officers that we responsible for George Floyd’s death to justice. β€’ Text β€œENOUGH” to 55156 to ask for the firing of the officers responsible for the death of Breonna Taylor. β€’ Donating to the Minnesota Freedom Fund*
β€’ Donating to support the Black Lives Matter movement*
β€’ Sign petitions calling for action for justice on all ends.*
β€’ Call DA Mike Freeman at 612-348-5550 to demand justice for George Floyd.
β€’ Stop sharing videos of traumatizing Black deaths on social media platforms as it may be triggering for some and exploitative of them and their family members. β€’ Spread awareness and educate those around you. β€’ For all those attending protests in their cities, stay safe and stay vigilant. *If anyone can not find links to these items, feel free to reach out to us via DM and we can pass along all the additional information.

It saddens us to make another post like this. Rest In Peace Hermana πŸ’—πŸ’œ β€’ @sigmalambdagamma We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Sister Patricia β€œTranquila” Anne Moore.

Patricia joined the Beta Alpha Chapter at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois (SIUC) in the Spring of 1999, and became #21 the Anchor of Las Inolvidables. She obtained a bachelor's in psychology and a master's in workforce education in 1999. Patricia spent most of her adulthood in Chicago, IL. She enjoyed reading, writing, traveling, and spending time with her friends and family. Most of all, she loved helping people.

In her professional career, she was a realtor for a brief period, but she found her true calling once she began advising college students. She became an advisor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the City Colleges of Chicago and was currently working at Parkland College.

Sister Patricia is survived by her father, Patrick Moore, her sister, Jodi Heck (brother-in-law Todd Heck), and two brothers, Marcius Moore and Justin Moore. She was a doting aunt to her nephew, Kaden Heck, and nieces, Evan Petty and Mckenna Heck. Sister Patricia loved her large extended family, the Maines family of Centralia. Please keep Patricia's family, friends, and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time. Hermanas Por Vida, Sisters For Life. Rest In Peace to Our Hermana πŸ’— β€’β€’ @sigmalambdagamma It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Sister Amanda Lynn Guzman. Sister Amanda Lynn β€œSimpática” Guzman #16 joined Phi Alpha Chapter at Pennsylvania State University in Fall β€˜99 as a member of the Alpha line. Her line name β€œSimpática” truly defined her character, always kind and nice with everyone.
Sister Amanda was an amazing and dedicated mother, daughter, sister, and friend. During her time at Penn State, she was a full-time student, a full-time mom, and worked on honing her skills as a DJ. She did an amazing job finding the balance of raising a fine young man and tending to her dreams. After graduating with a B.S. and Masters in Sociology & Demography in 2005, she became a prominent award-winning DJ also known as DJ Blazita or DJ Amanda Blaze.
Sister Amanda remained active with her chapter throughout the years by flying into town to DJ their annual Gamma Gala. She even took a step further to donate to her chapter each year.
Sister Amanda was always willing to do anything and everything to make sure you were taken care of and having a good time. She had a distinctive laugh that no one will ever forget.
Sister Amanda is survived by her parents, Larry and Sherry Guzman, her son, Jalen Guzman, and her sisters, Alison Guzman, Angie Dierkes, and Lacey Clymer. Please keep Amanda's family, friends, and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time. Hermanas Por Vida, Sisters For Life. En Esta y la Otra. πŸ’•πŸ’œ #djamandablaze #blazita
