Have you heard about our NEW Quality Education Initiatives?

We are sponsoring TWO cohorts of GVSU Faculty to participate in the Association of College and University Educators' (ACUE) Course in Effective Teaching Practices!

One cohort includes faculty who teach graduate courses and the second cohort consists of faculty teaching introductory or general education courses.

This is a hybrid course with the majority of the content being delivered ONLINE. It will run throughout the 2019-2020 academic year and begins this Fall

Did you know we have two options for NEW Adjunct Faculty Orientation? We realize most adjuncts manage other jobs, responsibilities and commitments and subsequently created some options that should work for everyone.

We offer a two-hour in-seat orientation in the evening (offered once on the Allendale Campus and once on the Pew GR Campus for convenience). It's a great chance to meet other adjuncts, get some hands on help with GVSU technology (Blackboard, banner, network login) and get answers to whatever questions new faculty might have.

For those who cannot make it to campus, we also offer an online orientation option.

Visit www.gvsu.edu/ftlc/nfo for more information.

Do you know of any new faculty that will be joining the GVSU community this coming Fall?

If so, please direct them to our New Faculty Orientation webpage (www.gvsu.edu/ftlc/nfo).

New faculty can review the orientation options and register to attend orientation in August. There's also links to great resources to help new faculty get started at GVSU.

Six Innovative Course Redesign Practices

If you're thinking about course redesign this summer, we invite you to check out this resource.

The National Center for Academic Transformation has identified six innovative course redesign practices and gives examples of how various colleges are implementing these practices.

Visit http://www.thencat.org/PlanRes/Innov_CrRedPractices.htm for more information. It's definitely worth a skim.

One characteristic of many course redesigns is large class size. Some redesigns begin with large lecture sections and retain those large sizes in the redesign; others reduce the number of sections offered and create larger classes; and, still others combine all sections into one large section. Perhaps we have replaced chalk with white-board markers and/or technology but rest assured, we are still changing lives.

Summer is a great time to reflect on how to perfect the "right mix" for your class and to think of new ways to challenge students.

Current Faculty Learning Communities - Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center - Grand Valley State University

Do you have a topic that you're passionate about and/or that you'd like to explore further?

Consider facilitating a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) this coming Fall!

The Pew FTLC has grant funds to cover a facilitation stipend as well as the cost of books/materials and light refreshments for FLCs.

Don't know if other faculty would be interested in the same thing you are? We can help. Submit an FLC proposal (via our Letter of Intent Form) and we'll advertise for you.

Visit www.gvsu.edu/ftlc/flcs for more information on submitting an FLC proposal and for a list of what sorts of FLCs (topics) have run in the past.

There's still time to register for our 25th Annual Fall Teaching Conference!

Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha's (our keynote speaker) research and activism surrounding the Flint water crisis is a real life application of the skills and knowledge associated with a liberal education. Her story will help GVSU faculty and staff identify ways to inspire students and to make connections among their coursework and the "real world" and to engage in their communities in informed and actionable ways.

Register in Sprout! Visit www.gvsu.edu/ftlc/fallconference for more information.

Accessible Syllabus

How long as hit been since you've done a complete syllabus overhaul?

If it's been a while...we have some resources that can help you make your syllabus more accessible to students. Consider adding images to your syllabus--yep, images. It's a quick way to communicate information and it engages students. It also looks pretty snazzy and fresh.

Consider the phrases used. For example, instead of saying "Late work receives a 40% reduction" you could say "Late work is eligible for 60% of the original points." The latter is more of an invitation than a command and can help you set the tone for an inclusive and supportive environment.

As you consider ways to improve your courses for next year, we encourage you to think about inclusive teaching strategies.

Our homepage has some great information on this very topic (www.gvsu.edu/ftlc) as does our teaching resources page (www.gvsu.edu/ftlc/teachingresources).

Here are some questions to consider when thinking about incorporating inclusive pedagogy.

Does your syllabus portray an inclusive and welcoming environment?

Do your instructional strategies include basic Universal Design for Learning (UDL) concepts?

Will you provide students with multiple ways to express their comprehension and mastery of topics vs just assigning exams and papers?

How Much Should We Assign? Estimating Out of Class Workload

We know it's finals week but are any of you already thinking about changes to your courses for next term/year?

If so, here's a resource that may interest you. It offers help in considering how much work to assign students--essentially, how to better estimate the out-of-class workload.

http://cte.rice.edu/blogarchive/2016/07/11/workload

"How much should I assign?" is one of the most basic questions teachers ask when designing and revising their courses. Yet it is also one of the most difficult to answer. To help instructors better calibrate their expectations, we've created a course workload estimator that incorporates th
