As GVSU faculty, we aim to foster an environment of inclusivity, no matter what gender, race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation one might identify with.

Dr. Bernice Sandler has complied a study and website, detailing ways that women are treated differently than men in college classrooms. Her website contains examples of what she refers to as the "Chilly Climate" and how it affects women, supplying ideas both faculty and students can use to "warm up" the chilly classroom climate for women.

Check out her website for more information: http://www.bernicesandler.com/id4.htm

Do you want to receive feedback on your teaching as the middle of the semester draws near?

The Mid-Semester Interview about Teaching, or MIT, is a mid-semester evaluation technique that provides instructors useful feedback from their students about their learning in a course.

Conducted during the 4th to 9th week of the semester, the MIT takes 30 minutes of class time wherein a consultant interviews the students and ultimately reports findings to the instructor.

Learn more and request a MIT at www.gvsu.edu/ftlc/mitinfo

As faculty members, it is our duty to create classrooms in which all students feel empowered to participate and interact freely.

When creating an inclusive environment for students, it is important to examine prior assumptions of multicultural issues and how they manifest in classrooms.

A University of Michigan article, called Creating Inclusive College Classrooms, provides a comprehensive discussion as well as step-by-step guidelines to creating classrooms that are welcoming, accepting, and inclusive.

There's still time to think about your Winter 2020 syllabi!

The book, "The Graphic Syllabus and the Outcomes Map", (available in the Pew FTLC Library) shows college instructors how to communicate their course organization to students in a graphic syllabus- a one-page diagram, flowchart, or concept map. It also documents the positive impact that graphics have on student learning, and why a syllabus like this is worthwhile to try out.
