Sigma Lambda Beta (known as Lambda Betas or Betas) is the largest historically Latino-based social fraternity established with multicultural membership. SLB was founded April 4th, 1986 at the University of Iowa on the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service, and Cultural Awareness. The foundation of our organization is based upon cultural understanding and wisdom; hence, our motto: "Opportunity for Wisdom, Wisdom for Culture." With over 150 entities in under 30 years of incorporation, Sigma Lambda Beta is considered the largest and fastest growing Latino-based multicultural membership fraternity in existence. Locally, Sigma Lambda Beta was founded at GVSU on December 5th, 1998 and was chartered as the Alpha Gamma Chapter on November 4th, 2004. Purpose/Aims "The purpose of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., shall be primarily one of promoting Latino/Hispanic culture and standards of excellence in morality, ethics, and education. Further, the Fraternity shall work to better serve the needs and wants of all people by disseminating the diverse culture which we all share. Finally the Fraternity shall maintain respect for the views of others through this tolerance, enhancing our understanding of one another, and thus bettering our community, our country, and the world." (National Constitution of Sigma Lambda Beta)
Mission: To nurture and further a dynamic value-based environment which utilizes our historically Latino-based fraternity as a catalyst to better serve the needs and wants of all people.

We'd like to take a moment to shout out our East Region brother Carlos Ruiz, whose story is being highlighted by the Young Latino Professionals of Toledo. Continue to do great things brother! #SigmaLambdaBeta #Toledo #Ohio
To continue our member spotlights, this month we are featuring one of YLPT's founding members, Mr. Carlos Ruiz.
Carlos is a first generation immigrant from Nicaragua. He moved to the United States with his parents and sister at the age of 4 months. After living in Miami, FL for 4 years, his family moved to Toledo, OH where he was raised and currently resides.
He attended the University of Toledo from 2006-2010 where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Finance. While at UT, he was involved all 4 years as a PRIMOS mentee/mentor as well as the Latino Student Union, where he served as an officer for 2 years. Additionally, in 2008 he became a Brother of Sigma Lambda Beta Int'l. Fraternity Inc. - Epsilon Alpha Chapter, which he is still actively involved with. As a senior, Carlos was awarded the Diamante - Youth Leadership Award as well as the Distinguished Multicultural Student Leader Award by the University of Toledo.
After college, Carlos began his career as a public employee when he began working as a Fiscal Intern at Lucas County Job and Family Services. Over the next 5 years, he worked his way up in county government to his current position where he now serves as the Chief Tax Accountant for the Lucas County Auditor, Anita Lopez.
Carlos's passion is serving as a volunteer in a number of community organizations, specifically those geared towards advancing the welfare of Latinos. His community involvement includes: Latino Alliance of NW Ohio (VP), Adelante, Latino and Community Resource Center (Exec. Board), UT Latino Alumni Affiliate (Exec. Board), Sigma Lambda Beta - EA Alumni Assoc., Young Latino Professionals of Toledo as well as serving as his church drummer for the past 17 years.
In his free time, when he has some, you can catch Carlos watching Star Wars with his family, traveling with the Musketeers or rooting for his favorite teams: the Toledo Rockets, the Cleveland Browns or the Cleveland Cavs.

#Oops Apparently this morning I upset some people after I greeted our viewers with a simple #BuenosDías after my coanchor wished everyone a #GoodMorning. Some decided it was uncalled for and unAmerican especially on #MemorialWeekend when we are supposed to honor those who died serving our country. Didn't realize that in this day and age a simple 2 word phrase would upset some people. #WeAreAllAmerican #LetsStopTheHate #HispanicsAlsoDiedForAmerica
We want to thank everyone who helped in the making of the tamales and to all the people who bought tamales. Also a thank you to Taqueria Diaz out of Whitehall Michigan for donating.

17 years ago on December 5th, 1998, the Alpha Gamma chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Grand Valley State University. Our chapter founder Jeremiah "Profeta" Garza desired to join the GVSU Greek community, but wanted his fraternity to represent his Latino cultural roots. He searched and found Sigma Lambda Beta - a Latino-based fraternity founded with multicultural membership, which would go on to become the largest and fastest growing Latino social fraternity with over 150 entities. #SigmaLambdaBeta #GVSU #Latino #Fraternity #GreekLife
To learn more about Sigma Lambda Beta, visit our chapter's page on the GVSU website and contact us at [email protected] for details on our next informational presentation.
Do you know about the Young Lords?
Do you know about the Young Lords? They were only about 19 years old when this group of predominantly Puerto Rican activists took over a church to feed hungry kids, commandeered an x-ray truck to get tuberculosis screenings in their neighborhoods and got the city to pick up festering garbage. Their legacy lives on in school breakfast programs and other services that were lacking then.
This Wednesday. Come with questions, leave with answers! #TeamGVSU #GVSU

Spanish and Arabic words in comparison. #CulturalAwareness #SigmaLambdaBeta
Spanish and Arabic have more in common than you think, and it's not a coincidence.
This past weekend, many chapters of Sigma Lambda Beta celebrated Día de los Muertos, or Day of The Dead.
Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and acknowledged around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.
“We come together not to mourn, but to celebrate the legacy they left behind,” said Marvin Turcios-Gonzalez, president of Sigma Lambda Beta's Sigma Delta chapter (Florida Gulf Coast University)

We are two weeks away from our biggest community service event of the year. Join us on Saturday, November 14th, as we clean up the Grandville Ave neighborhood in Grand Rapids. Most of our service work will directly benefit the elderly. We will also provide lunch for our volunteers. This event wouldn't be possible without the help of the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan! Click on the link for more information. Thank you!
