Amarillo College Honors & Scholars

Amarillo College Honors & Scholars An enrichment program for gifted and high-performing students at Amarillo College.

We are a learning community with a focus on arts, culture, communication, community service, leadership, and global affairs. The Amarillo College Honors Program is a dual purpose program with two options. The first option provides Honors courses in high-demand subjects to academically-prepared students. The second option, the Presidential Scholars Honors program, offers a learning community that gives high achieving and motivated students the opportunity to participate in student-centered learning experiences that promote intellectual growth, cultural appreciation, professional focus, leadership development, and civic participation.

My Amarillo is a new Amarillo Tribune section that provides a space for our neighbors across the city to share what it is like to live here, in their own words. Our latest installment comes from Daniella Mendoza, development manager at the Don Harrington Discovery Center.

"I believe education has the power to change a life. I believe that because it changed mine and continues to shape my future through my career at the Don Harrington Discovery Center.

"I’m a first-generation Mexican American and I grew up on the East side of Amarillo. My parents didn’t have the opportunity to pursue much formal education themselves, with one only completing middle school and the other high school. But they made sure I understood from an early age that education could open doors for me that had not been available to them.

"They pushed me to work hard in school because they wanted me to have choices. They wanted me to have access to a future of broader possibilities than they had.

"I was also fortunate to have teachers in my life who invested in me and encouraged me to seek opportunities I didn’t know existed or didn’t feel qualified to pursue. Looking back, I realize how much these individuals changed the trajectory of my life simply by believing that I was capable of more and fighting for me to have a chance."

We have had a busy few days! We volunteered at the Friends of the Amarillo Public Library book sale, earning tips for the Chris Macon Memorial Scholarship, we attended a Lady Badgers volleyball game, and today we enjoyed Fall Fest! There is always something going on in the Presidential Scholars program. 💙🤍💙

The ‘26-‘27 academic year is off to a strong start!

This group of brand new Presidential Scholars is lively, diverse, and enthusiastic. We were lucky enough to have AC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Frank Sobey, attend our very first class meeting on Tuesday! His words of wisdom, encouragement, and “real talk” was the perfect way to kick-off the year.

It’s a great sign that Professor Ingham can hear chatter and laughter in the classroom before entering the room, especially this early in the semester.

Congratulations to Carlos Melendez on his graduation from Texas Tech in electrical engineering! 👏
