The next Collins Nursery of the Ambler Arboretum Open Day is Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.! Please note: All purchases may be made with a credit card or checks. The Collins Nursery will be unable to accept cash.

We are reaching the tail end of spring and soon rounding into summer! So, what should the home gardener be thinking about at this time of year?

According to Sam Makler, Manager of the Collins Nursery of the Ambler Arboretum, “in late May what I start to think about is not only the standard care but filling in any gaps.”

“Every year I tell myself that there are no more gaps and there is no more planting to be done but by May and certainly by June you start to see some spots where you’re thinking ‘I could fill in one more thing here or there.’” he said. “This is a great time to find those spaces and think about size, color, whatever your pollinator interest might be, what you want to attract. This is the time when you really start to see the garden begin to fully form. So, you can identify those spaces where you can start to add in some new things.”

The Collins Nursery, Makler said, “is the best place to go and find those things” to fill the gaps.

“Because we have such a large variety of native species here you can always find those common things but what we like to highlight are the things that are not as widely available,” he said. “When folks start to buy them, they tend to be fan favorites.”

Additional Collins Nursery Open days will be held on June 13, July 4, July 11, August 15, September 12, September 26 and October 17 so mark your calendar!

It's hard to believe that it was just one week ago that Little Stinker the co**se flower made its proudly pungent 2026 debut!

Check out this story from the PhillyVoice highlighting Little Stinker and Ben Snyder, Manager of the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University Greenhouse Education and Research Complex!

Ben is growing 12 co**se flowers in the Greenhouse so be sure to keep an eye out for announcements of the next in the future!

The plant, which is said to smell a bit like rotting flesh, only flowers for a few days and it can be years before it returns.

Lindsay Slusser, a landscape architecture major in the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, has been named one of 65 students nationwide and the first Temple student in nine years to be awarded the Udall Scholarship!

The Udall Scholarship is a highly competitive national award for college sophomores and juniors committed to careers in the environment, tribal public policy or healthcare. Unlike traditional merit scholarships focused primarily on GPA, the Udall emphasizes leadership, public service and demonstrated commitment to these fields.

“I am really into conservation and ecological restoration while repairing the damage that’s been done,” said Slusser. “It’s about creating a healthier, more cohesive environment for the future, one that supports not just people, but all life that depends on it.” Read more at https://bit.ly/3PCGVGV.

So, what happens to co**se flowers after they bloom? According to Ben Snyder, Manager of the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University Greenhouse Education and Research Complex, it will go through a co**se flower’s growth cycle all over again (just like the other 11 co**se flowers he has growing in the Greenhouse).

“The co**se flower grows from a tuber. After flowering, everything above ground will disappear and a leaf will emerge. This leaf will be green for 12 to 18 months before dying back. Then it will remain dormant for 4 to 5 months,” Snyder said. “At this point if it is mature enough, it will produce a flower. If not, it will produce a leaf and start the whole cycle over again until it has enough energy to flower.”

For a blooming co**se flower, it will likely take a few cycles for the flower to bloom again.

See you next time Little Stinker!
