We couldn't be more proud of the Iowa State Business Council students who raised awareness for youth homelessness and more than $50,000 at Reggie's Sleepout this weekend! #IvyProud

Just one night of cold and rain won't let anyone experience what it is truly like to be homeless, but it gives just a little more insight. Business Council had a great night last night bonding and raising awareness for youth homelessness at Reggie's Sleepout and we are especially proud of our members who made it through the whole night. Thank you to all of the donors to our team and the event - Business Council ended up raising the third highest amount of all teams and more than $50,000 was raised for this wonderful cause. We can't wait to participate again next year!

No coasting for this Ivy senior. In his last month at Iowa State, Brandon Beecham is squeezing in a research tour. The accounting and finance double major, who will start in John Deere Financial's early career development program this summer, sought to discover why college got so expensive, so fast, and present his topic at three undergraduate research events.

Meet the 2019 Iowa STATEment Makers: Kimberly Hurd (’14 accounting)

Kimberly Hurd and her husband, Colin, are the founders of the Kolbe Scott Foundation – a donor-advised fund that supports families who have lost infant children and pays opportunity forward to children around the world. The fund was created in memory of the Hurds’ son, Kolbe, who died in-utero at 33 weeks due to a condition called triploidy.

“Colin and I have been taught a different way of parenting,” Kimberly says. “Although Kolbe is not physically here, we are still his parents and we are still responsible for his legacy.” That legacy includes an orphanage in India, which opened in June 2017 to 12 boys aged six through 12. The home bears a plaque with the names of deceased children whose parents chose to honor them with gifts to the Kolbe Scott Foundation.

Her favorite Iowa State tradition: Homecoming

Her guilty pleasure: This is embarrassing, but my guilty pleasure is canned corn. I love it!

What’s next: I want to start a group of women that focuses on authenticity.

What this honor means to her: My son died in-utero and my only desire was to continue his legacy. I wanted to bring beauty from his ashes.

Meet the 2019 Iowa STATEment Makers: Erik Gustafson (’10 finance)

As one of Wells Fargo’s youngest investment bankers, Erik has worked closely on financing deals for companies such as Microsoft, Apple, and Oracle and moved to London in order to play a key role in the bank’s expansion efforts in Europe. Erik credits a lot of his professional achievements to the leadership lessons he learned as an armor officer in the U.S. Army National Guard, serving with the 252nd BCT in Fayetteville, NC, from 2010-2014.

His favorite spots on campus: Iowa State University Library and Lied Recreation Athletic Facility

The movie he’s always quoting: “The Big Lebowski”

His favorite words of wisdom: "Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent, and original manner possible." – Richard Feynman

What Iowa State means to him: “I always look back at my time at Iowa State with fond memories and, in particular, a deep appreciation for the supportive and challenging professors I encountered along the way. I must credit them with providing the spark and direction for the career I have today. I guess, in a single word, to me Iowa State is opportunity.”

Here's your #FeelGoodFriday story! Minnesota fifth grader, Mae, quickly fell in love with an Ivy College of Business pen her mom received after attending a Women in Agribusiness conference sponsored by our executive MBA program. Here's the sad part of the story—she lost it! Mae's mom quickly reached out to us to see if we had another pen that was exactly the same. We're happy to report that this future Cyclone has a new pen and some new Ivy gear to go with it.

See you in 2026, Mae!

It just doesn't get much better than this. 😊

It was another fun College Partnership day! Yesterday was Business Day for the King 2nd graders. Thanks to Sarah Adams (Undergraduate Recruitment Coordinator for the Iowa State University Ivy College of Business) and Marketing student Carmen Frederick, these ISU 4U Promise students spent part of the morning acting like business owners of a pizza restaurant - and making pizzas out of Play Doh!

Later that day, one of the 2nd grade teachers emailed to share this story:

"I had a group of students who said when they grow up they are really going to open their pizza business. They also decided they are going to open a different business right next door and they even drew a picture of them both!"

--
The ISU 4U Promise College Partnership program matches each of the undergraduate colleges at Iowa State University with one of the grades at ISU 4U Promise partner schools King and Moulton. It was started in order to connect ISU students, staff, and faculty with ISU 4U Promise students at King and Moulton so they could learn a little bit about each college during their K-5 years. The partnerships are as follows:

Kindergarten - College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
1st grade - College of Design
2nd grade - College of Business
3rd grade - College of Human Sciences
4th grade - College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
5th grade - College of Engineering
