Muhammad Azhan, a Ph.D. candidate in Prof. Kirill Kovnir’s research group, received the Gold Award at the ACS Fall 2026 meeting in Chicago.

Azhan was selected as a finalist for the ACS Energy & Fuels Division Student Award and presented a five-minute flash talk on his research during the final competition. Following his presentation, he was selected as a Gold Award winner. The award includes a $400 prize.

His talk focused on the design and synthesis of multimetallic transition-metal phosphides for electrocatalytic hydrogen production.

Kirill Kovnir, professor in the Department of Chemistry, is leading a team that received a U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) grant to develop ultra-strong magnets using artificial intelligence and innovative synthesis methods. 🧲

“Armed with state-of-the-art theoretical and AI-driven tools, it is truly like embarking on a treasure hunt for new magnetic materials,” said Yongxin Yao, Ames National Laboratory scientist and Iowa State adjunct associate professor of physics and astronomy.
