INFECTION PREVENTION. Dr. Molly Lee, director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health in the College of Veterinary Medicine, gave a continuing education event last Friday to Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center staff members. The CE event focused on practical applications of infection prevention and biosecurity through real-world scenarios and discussions.

MOBILE X-RAY. The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Field Service (VFS) has acquired a new mobile X-ray machine. The X-ray will be utilized by VFS clinicians and fourth-year veterinary students to enhance diagnostic power in the field. Among its many uses include shooting radiographs for limb and hoof issues in food animal and camelid patients and high-resolution imaging to expand VFS’ potential in the field. The portable, wireless and battery-operated unit will allow clinicians to take images where their patients are. Funds from the Anderson Chair in Veterinary Medicine, held by Dr. Pat Gorden, were used to purchase the unit.

The position partners with faculty, clinicians and hospital leadership to oversee the daily operations of the hospital while supporting a talented team of veterinary technicians, animal caretakers and student employees.

REGENTS AWARD. Carrie Schwake, associate director of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center, is the recipient of the 2026 ISU Regents Award for Staff Excellence. Schwake's contributions to the LVMC financial systems, technology infrastructure and workforce development will serve the hospital for years to come.

REGENTS AWARD. Dr. Joan Howard, clinical professor of veterinary clinical sciences, is the recipient of the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence at Iowa State. A board-certified equine veterinarian, Howard manages more than 900 cases annually in addition to leading an impactful community outreach program at the Crow Creek Reservation.

MEET DR. RIGHI. Megan Righi has joined the College of Veterinary Medicine faculty with speciality in food animal medicine. Righi joins Iowa State after completing a residency in large animal internal medicine at Oklahoma State University.

HOUSE OFFICERS. The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center has welcomed new residents and interns to both the Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital and the Large Animal Hospital this summer.

NEW FACE. Dr. Jenna Trenhaile is the newest intern in Veterinary Field Services. Trenhaile is a 2026 DVM College of Veterinary Medicine graduate who participated in the 2+2 program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Iowa State. Growing up in Nebraska, her spark for veterinary medicine began in high school while helping tail calves for the local veterinarian, and from that point on, she knew she wanted to pursue a career working with animals and the people who care for them. Her professional interests include rural mixed-animal medicine, where she enjoys the variety of cases and the opportunity to work closely with producers, pet owners, and their communities.

SERVING IOWA. The Veterinary Field Service units in the College of Veterinary Medicine provide on-farm services to livestock producers throughout Iowa. Equipped with full-stocked veterinary trucks, the units see food animal (cattle, pigs and small ruminants) and equine (horses, donkeys and mules) species.
