Welch taught one of the first courses in the United States with sociological content. Since the early days of the department we have been guided by a vision to create and disseminate knowledge that advances the well being of all people, especially the people of Iowa. Paul Lasley, a retired Iowa State University sociology professor, restores violins for the Stephens Auditorium instrument drive, helping local schools provide instruments and expand access to music education. 🎻

“If only one kid who plays one of those 18 violins bonds with it, and they play until they are an old person like me, that’s a gift. That’s a gift to me, knowing there are people out there who will follow in my footsteps,” said Lasley.

See how Lasley’s passion for music continues:

When Paul Lasley retired from teaching at Iowa State, he promised himself he would learn to play the violin. But when his favorite violin broke, Lasley decid...

🚨Help us congratulate Officer Abby Boes 👮‍♀️for being a 2025 MADD Hero Award recipient.🚨

Abby was nominated for this award due to her ability to detect impaired drivers and for keeping our roadways safe at all times of the day and night. She leads the patrol division in OWI enforcement and has volunteered for additional training in Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE). She has also recently certified as a Drug Recognition Expert, one of only two on the department.

Her success is not measured only in arrests, but by the lives that are saved by removing these impaired drivers from our streets before something bad occurs. Keep up the good work ABBY!!! 🐐🏆🎖️

Ben Kiesow (‘26 criminal justice) benefits from a strong connection between his academic work and ROTC training, with each reinforcing the other and helping him grow both in the classroom and in the field.

“My experience has been great, and I wouldn’t have been able to be successful without the training I received from senior cadets, as well as, our exceptional cadre staff,” said Kiesow. “This program is one of the best in the country and it will more than prepare you for every obstacle thrown your way on your path to commissioning.”
