The annual Greenlee Welcome Back Ice Cream Social was a success! Not only did students enjoy Iowa State University Creamery ice cream, they learned about the various clubs and organizations Greenlee offers to get involved outside of the classroom.

We offer clubs for each of our majors, where students can connect with like-minded peers, explore new avenues of creativity or just have fun.

The Minds of LAS: Daniela Dimitrova 🧠

Daniela Dimitrova, University Professor and LAS Dean’s Professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, joined the Iowa State faculty in 2003 with a focus on global journalism. Through her role, Dimitrova has connected students with international colleagues across Europe, creating opportunities for global media work, study, and teaching.

“My favorite part about teaching is when I can see the students’ educational horizons expand – when they are surprised, engaged, and even challenged with new concepts covered in class," said Dimitrova. “Seeing the spark in their eyes is truly a special moment!”

A new broadcast studio is coming to Hamilton Hall! 🎥

Since March, the IT Services audiovisual experience team has partnered with Greenlee to develop a new multi-camera broadcast studio, similar to the Student Innovation Center’s digital media studio, expanding hands-on learning opportunities for students.

"The new studio spaces give students access to the same tools and production environments they will encounter in today's media industries, empowering them to turn ideas into meaningful stories," said Tracy Lucht, director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.

Estefany Figueroa is a senior in advertising and works as a creative intern at Strategic America for the summer. We asked, she shared about her experience:

"My internship at Strategic America has been such a great learning experience. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of creative projects, collaborate with different teams, and get a better understanding of how ideas move from concept to ex*****on in a real agency setting. It’s been exciting to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to real client work while also developing new skills along the way.

One thing that really helped prepare me was everything I learned at the Greenlee School, especially through hands-on classes like Advertising Campaigns. That class gave me experience working with a real client, collaborating with a team, presenting ideas, and seeing how a campaign comes together from start to finish. Those experiences made me feel much more confident going into my internship, and I was able to build on those skills in a professional setting."

Emma Osthus, junior in public relations, shares snippets from her summer internship.

"Working as an intern at The Clubhouse At Talons has been a dream come true. I've spent my summer working alongside a one-of-a-kind team, helping with events, marketing, branding and social media. Every day has been different, and that's what I've loved most about this experience. One of my favorite projects has been designing The Clubhouse scorecard and marketing flyer for the DSM Magazine Unveiling event we hosted. I'm so grateful for this opportunity and everything I've learned."

Throwback Thursday: Doug Jensen (‘89 journalism and mass communication, statistics) ✨

Doug Jensen, a member of the LAS Dean’s Advisory Council, serves as head of business development for Ekimetrics, a France-based data science company. With more than 35 years of experience in data and analytics, he exemplifies the wide range of opportunities an LAS degree can unlock.

“My statistics major prepared me for the day-to-day ‘mechanics’ of building statistical models to answer client business questions in the marketing/media arena,” said Jensen. “And my journalism and mass communication major armed me with critical thinking skills, presentation and storytelling skills, and the concept of asking why many times to get to the truth.”
