La dolce vita! Fourteen students just returned from Rome as part of the Morning in Roma study abroad program.

With most class time spent on foot, students explored the city at a human scale, seeing how ancient and modern layers shape the way people live. Led by associate professor Michael Martin, the experience builds real world skills in observation, design thinking, and cultural awareness.

Experiences like this give College of Design students a new perspective on how design shapes real places and everyday life.

Exciting news from Northwest Iowa!
Join us in celebrating associate professor of architecture Merate Barakat, a current Artist-in-Residence (AIR) at Iowa Lakeside Lab, during the lab's Open Artists' Studio and 2026 season kickoff.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place this Thursday, June 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 at Pammel Lab, Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in Milford.

Barakat's work explores the intersection of architecture, sound, and human perception, inviting new ways of understanding how we experience designed environments. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist, tour the AIR studio, and learn more about her research and creative process.

From classroom concept to your closet...

Two student-designed apparel pieces from the Cyclones Take New York competition are now in production—and available to purchase!

The project pairs fashion merchandising and graphic design students to collaborate on market-ready Cyclone apparel. This year’s winning graphic designers are Grace Starr (BFA ’26, first place) and Tiara Young (second place).
