Naveen Prabakar (‘26 computer science) didn’t first discover his interest in computer science through coding — it began at the chessboard. ♟️

“In high school, I was on the chess team, and I loved the problem-solving aspect,” said Prabakar. “When I took a computer science class, I realized it was a similar kind of thinking, just applied differently.”

A research team led by Yang Yang, assistant professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology, used images from a cryogenic electron microscope to better understand why a common type of antiviral drug struggles to fight off the virus that causes COVID-19. 🔬

“These atomic snapshots provide a lot of insight into exactly what functional groups are interacting and what kind of modifications could make these treatments more effective,” said Yang.

Robots can be programmed to follow rules, but real-world situations aren’t always clear-cut. 🤖

Iowa State researchers have created a “rulebooks” framework that helps autonomous systems weigh competing priorities and make safer, more transparent decisions when no perfect option exists.

“Robots are increasingly expected to operate without human intervention in situations where some rules may have to be bent,” said Tichakorn Wongpiromsarn, associate professor of computer science. “What’s been missing is a principled way to justify these decisions.”

When Brian Bevington (‘27 psychology) transferred to Iowa State in fall 2025, he set out to get involved right away — applying for an undergraduate research position, an internship, and a student leadership role, hoping to land at least one opportunity. He was accepted to all three.

“To be completely honest, I was worried coming into Iowa State. I didn’t know how my course load would be or how I would do academically,” said Bevington. “To hit the ground running, so to speak, and to get these opportunities and get connected with the right people, I feel like things have really worked out for me.”
