Coming soon to the Design Building Gallery: In Community, by Julia Giguere, M.Des '27

In Community explores the communes and intentional communities that took shape across Western Massachusetts and New England in the 1960s and 1970s.

Through archival photographs and materials, the exhibition looks at communal living as an experiment in design, rethinking the spaces we inhabit and the ways we live together.

Come explore the people, places, and ideas behind these experiments in imagining another way of life.

📍 Design Building Gallery, Oct 29 - Dec 18

This semester, Design 5 students are working with the Chaubunagungamaug Band of Nipmuck Indians (CBNI) to develop a Nipmuck Culture and Resilience Hub at their scenic site in Oxford, Massachusetts.

Students made hand-crafted vessels inspired by CBNI artifacts and analyzed their 4.5-acre hilltop site through multiple lenses: history, geology, climate, and regional connectivity.

Yesterday, the students presented their work and participated in a collaborative charrette alongside Ite Santana (CBNI Tribal Council Chair), Jennifer Albertine (Mount Grace Land Trust), among other CBNI partners.

This project exemplifies what's possible when architecture centers cultural thinking, sustainability, and community leadership.

Funded by a State Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Grant and a UMass Public Service Engagement Grant, the work will continue through Professors Naomi Darling and Ray Mann's firm, Ko-LAB Architecture, to get this project through permit. Regional Planning PhD student Michael Amato continues to act as a consultant and contributor to this project's planning.

A special thanks to our CBNI community partners!
