Massachusetts Society of Professors - UMass Amherst The Massachusetts Society of Professors (MSP) union represents faculty & librarians at UMass Amherst.

As a member driven union, MSP’s main role is to advocate for its faculty and librarian members. In addition to contract negotiation/enforcement and representation, they focus on addressing a range of issues that affect the lives of their members and the quality of education offered at the University. The Massachusetts Society of Professors works with the Faculty Senate and administration on issues affecting the academic community, actively lobbies for University funding and represents the campus before the state's higher education and political authorities. MSP also strongly advocates for the students of UMass Amherst and for quality and affordable public higher education. The MSP gains further strength and influence through their affiliations with the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) and the National Education Association (NEA).

Have you seen our amazing PVTA bus ads?! "MSP continues to celebrate FIFTY YEARS of defending academic freedom, excellence, and accessibility!" Members are sharing photos of the buses they've seen around the valley. If you see one, send a *safely* taken shot to the MSP inbox!

As we build momentum and prepare ourselves for the next contract campaign, we can celebrate the hard work that faculty and librarians have done to protect faculty governance, research, and learning conditions at UMass -- all areas that will be addressed in our platform. Connect with your department rep or the office if you want to organize with us! We have upcoming workshops in October and November and are also happy to meet 1:1!

Welcome new MSP members!! Last night we hosted a night of solidarity in Groff Park with this year's incoming faculty and librarians, their families, and a very sweet, shy dog. We were honored to host one member's mom, who flew in the night before from Mumbai. The weather was lovely, Black Sheep's catering was excellent (no surprise there), and we were thrilled to take a break from the start-of-semester grind and get to know each other!

Want to connect socially with more people in the union? Keep an eye out for MSP Connections events this year! We regularly host nights out to see performancss and sporting events. Join us!

And save the date for our Fall General Assembly on December 8th. More details to come!

"RESEARCH CENTERS ARE BUILD AROUND PEOPLE: faculty, graduate students, engineers, policy experts, and industry partners."

MSP member, Prof. Sanjay Arwade, and Matt O'Malley, the Chief Sustainability Officer of Vicinity Energy, teamed up to publish an op-ed about the future of the clean energy sector in Massachusetts.

As the federal government rescinded critical funding for state- and nationwide projects, Gov. Healey put forward the DRIVE Act to direct hundreds of millions of dollars towards public higher education for the training that's needed to push innovation forward.

Another Action Alert!!! USA members at UMass Amherst are grieving the administration’s use of a time-keeping system, Kronos, in direct violation of Article 8, Section 8 of their contract.

USA members have serious concerns about the impact of Kronos on data privacy, surveillance, and flexibility at UMass, as well as its negative impact on the labor force in general. They fought hard at the bargaining table to keep it out of the workplace!

The company is owned by UKG, a privately-held workforce management software company that recently cited AI as the primary reason for laying off 950 workers.

MSP and our sibling UMass unions have learned that the contract of an organizer in the Holyoke Teachers Association, Bob Williams, has not been renewed. His union-- a sibling MTA local -- fears retaliation for his many union-related activities. Bob’s served as a silent rep at 17 bargaining sessions, volunteered as a Building Action Team member, and supported HTA as a building rep.

We marched with HTA in May as they demanded a fair contract and we encourage members to sign HTA’s petition to reinstate Bob. MSP strongly rejects all acts of union interference and retaliation!

The MTA Summer Conference returns to UMass Amherst, from July 26 to 29, for four days of workshops, skill-building and community! Register now massteacher.org/summer-conference.

This year's theme is Building on Legacies of Collective Resistance, which inspires us to learn from the long history of movements for labor, racial, gender, education and economic justice, as well as other related struggles for dignity. By grounding today’s political and social moment in historical context, we strengthen our confidence, cultivate hope, and build our capacity to translate hard-won lessons into effective action today.

Choose from over 100 sessions on union skills, professional development and anti-oppression education, plus bargaining and PDP certificate courses and graduate credit. If you are a new member, a new president or a next-generation leader, there is special programming for you.
