Massachusetts Society of Professors - UMass Amherst

Massachusetts Society of Professors - UMass Amherst The Massachusetts Society of Professors (MSP) is a union representing the faculty and librarians on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus.

As a member driven union, MSP’s main role is to advocate for its faculty and librarian members. In addition to contract negotiation/enforcement and representation, they focus on addressing a range of issues that affect the lives of their members and the quality of education offered at the University. The Massachusetts Society of Professors works with the Faculty Senate and administration on issues affecting the academic community, actively lobbies for University funding and represents the campus before the state's higher education and political authorities. MSP also strongly advocates for the students of UMass Amherst and for quality and affordable public higher education. The MSP gains further strength and influence through their affiliations with the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) and the National Education Association (NEA).

On November 18, 2020, staff and faculty union members met at the @umassamherst Fine Arts Center to request that the university #BringStaffBack from indefinite furloughs and reduced hours. Social distancing and cold weather gear was the norm. Projected messages illuminated the iconic Fine Arts Center. This was one stop of many for the projection crew who went to other UMass universities and colleges. (Photos by Frank A.) #Furloughs #Union

Furloughs Hurt: Voices of UMass

“If I lose my job to a layoff, I will also lose my home as a Residence Director who lives on campus.”
- Carley P., PSUMTA member

In September, Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy announced that UMass Amherst staff who are members of PSU and USA would bear the brunt of a budget shortfall by taking furloughs and hour reductions, some of which are indefinite. These austerity measures have a massive impact on the community, and especially the staff members who are uncertain when or if they will be able to return to work and continue to help students and the campus.

Hello! I am a UMass Amherst Alumni! I am currently working on my Doctorate in Educational Leadership and need both online and traditional instructors to take my survey! Please pass along, I greatly appreciate it!!
Oakland teachers are on strike for smaller classes, more school nurses, more counselors, better pay -- you know, the things that make teaching possible. I know they'd appreciate a message of solidarity if anyone is moved to send one.
