Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is the world’s oldest and largest secret national fraternal society in music. Sinfonia was born on October 6, 1898, at the New England Conservatory in Boston, when a group of thirteen young men under the guidance of Ossian Everett Mills met "to consider the social life of the young men students of that institution [and] to devise ways and means by which it might be improved." Sinfonia became a national fraternity on October 6, 1900, with the admission of a group of men at the Broad Street Conservatory in Philadelphia. For over a century, Sinfonians in nearly every field of study and professional endeavor have transformed music in America. The opportunity of becoming a Sinfonian is offered to as many men as possible who, through a love for music, can assist in the fulfillment of the Fraternity’s Object and ideals either by adopting music as a profession, or by working to advance the cause of music in America. Last but not certainly not least, our final senior spotlight goes to @_superunknown ! Ben is a Math major who entered our chapter in Fall 2017 (Nu Class). Ben served as our FEO and more recently President over the last year, and he plays guitar and trumpet. On campus, he participated in Concert Band, Pep Band, and was the 2020 Honor Guard Captain and Trumpet Field Staff multiple years for the UMass Marching Band! After graduation, Ben is taking some time off to figure out what he wants to do in the future.

On behalf of our entire chapter, I want to sincerely thank Ben for his leadership and service he provided to our chapter. This last year was extremely challenging for us, as COVID prevented us from doing so many things we had planned. In these uncertain times where PMA wasn’t a priority for a lot of us, Ben was a light, always there to guide us where we needed to go. Despite the challenges, we still accomplished a lot of great things this past year, including taking two amazing classes, Rho and Sigma class, and getting them through the process. We could not have done any of this without Ben, and we are going to miss him very, very much. Congratulations Ben❤️🖤💛

Hello all! Adjusting to life during a global pandemic has proven to be tiresome and even isolating at times. This is why we have created the PMA Virtual Serenade Fundraiser! From March 8th - March 26th, you will have the opportunity to order a Virtual Serenade(s) for someone that you care about. Within your order will be "A Serenade to a Girl" performed by the Sigma Alpha Choir, as well as a personalized message recorded by a brother of your choosing! Proceeds will be going to the Amherst Survival Center. If you're interested, below will be a link to the google order form, and we will get to work on sending them out!

🚨RHO ALERT🚨
Two days ago, Rho Class officially completed their process to become full collegiate members! They are also the first class in the history of Sigma Alpha to undergo the process completely remote over Zoom. Being Probationary Members for a whopping 54 weeks (due to Covid + Restrictions), these guys have proven themselves to be some of the most determined, resilient, and caring men we’ve ever had the honor of welcoming into our chapter. We are so proud of everything they have accomplished, and are so excited to make more memories with them, hopefully in person soon. Congratulations, Rho Class ❤️🖤💛

The disgusting murder of George Floyd was just one of many acts of racism demonstrated by the United States police. We are devastated by the history of hate and violence toward POC perpetuated in this country by systemic racism. We stand with and completely support POC and the Black Lives Matter Movement, and will be donating to ACLU, NAACP, and BLM to help out as much as we can.
We also want to encourage any and all student organizations to continue to show your support for the Black Lives Matter Movement. Here below will be links to BLM, NAACP, and ACLU, please support and chip in anything you can. Now is not the time to be complacent.

Virtual AMR: Brother at the Door

Due to the pandemic, our spring semester at UMass was cut short. This means that a number of our planned events were cancelled, such as our American Music Recital. Fortunately for us, our amazing Music Director William Superneau set up a way for us to do a virtual performance for our AMR instead! Here, eight brothers performed Brother at the Door, a song about being there for your brothers, which we think is very important especially during these tumultuous times. We hope you enjoy.

Following Brother Hsu we go back to the alumni! This is Brother Matt Garrity! He was a Music Education major class of '18, and he became a brother as part of Theta class in the Spring of 2015.
Big/Little: Steve Schneider / Matt Storie
Matt is the Music Teacher at South Hadley High School and teaches band, chorus and marching band (fitting for him, he was an exceptional Music Director for us not long ago!). He loves Boston Sports, Nintendo Video games and food (Don't we all! 😂).
On being a part of Phi Mu Alpha, Matt had this to say: "Males feel emotions and can be human! Music helps us express our humanity and brings us together."
Wise words Matt.
We are still feeling the effects of your golden voice and all the wonderful vocal techniques you taught us! Keep doing what you were born to do, brother!

Following Brother Mange in our Get to Know a Brother series, we go from old to new with Brother Linus Hsu! Linus is an Operations & Information Management major, class of '22, who became a brother as a part of our most recent Omicrom class in Spring of 2019!
Big: John "Jack" Mellish (Lambda '16)
Linus loves to read and play video games just as much as hiking or playing most sports, and it's a fun fact that he can, in fact, solve a Rubik's Cube (Whoa nelly!).
On joining Phi Mu Alpha, Linus said "(it) had given me the opportunity to do super cool things with a great group of people I would have never known otherwise".
We couldn't be happier to have a bright light like Linus shining the way for our next generation of Sinfonians to go through Sigma Alpha!
