Thank you so much to everyone who supported the Libraries during #UMassGives! Your gifts provide students with resources like free, open source textbooks through the Open Education Initiative, which has saved students over $1.8 million in course materials; study and discovery spaces like the newly expanded Digital Media Lab, where they can explore 3D printing, virtual and augmented reality, and the latest audiovisual equipment; and services that meet our users wherever they are, including contactless pickup and remote research assistance.

Honored to announce "Truth, Dissent, and the Legacy of Daniel Ellsberg", a virtual, two-day conference, created in collaboration with The GroundTruth Project. It's free and open to the public.

The event—slated to take place April 30 and May 1—will commemorate the 50th anniversary release of Pentagon Papers, featuring distinguished historians, journalists, activists and former policymakers, including an historic conversation between Ellsberg and whistleblower Edward Snowden, moderated by Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!

As a complement to the conference, a new five-part GroundTruth podcast series, "The Whistleblower: Truth, Dissent and the Legacy of Daniel Ellsberg," will launch April 15.

General information

As a gateway to knowledge, the Libraries are a key partner in teaching, learning, and research at UMass Amherst and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Supporting freedom of inquiry, the Libraries foster a diverse and inclusive environment in which to engage with ideas and acquire the critical skills necessary for life-long learning. By combining the latest information technology with excellent public service, the staff builds and maintains a rich information environment, facilitates access to it, and creates a hub of campus and community scholarly activity. Our staff of over 40 librarians, 80 paraprofessionals, and hundreds of student assistants are eager to assist both remote and in-building users. We are a member of the Association of Research Libraries and participate in many collaborations to broaden our collections and extend or enhance our services to UMass Amherst students, faculty, and staff. Community members are invited to visit our two library buildings, borrow materials, and enjoy most of our extensive services. Is it just me, or does one of the eggs seem to be missing? I swear there's only two in there right now.
Yesterday I was at the Library and noticing the sad shape of the courtyard needing a bit of Spring TLC. So I took it upon myself to donate an hour of my day to spruce things up a bit. I only cut back stuff that I knew needed it. It'll be slow but I'll get there. By the way, there's another duck nesting in the same grass as last year
Will there be a Tower Run this year? 🤞
Dr French did amazing work with the falcons that nest on top of Du Bois Library. He will be missed!
Go UMass Libraries! Steve Priest '66 Engineering, just published his sixth outdoor adventure guidebook, "Outdoor Play 4 Seniors." Speaking of ice-boating on Perkins Pond, here is one video from my latest book. The book is on Amazon.com in both paperback and e-book. With e-book, you click on the link, and you can whirl around Perkins Pond with Outdoor Steve. 😀 Amazon has a special, buy the paperback, and the e-book is free! https://www.amazon.com/dp/0985038454 https://youtu.be/6L8pihMM89I
In case you haven't seen this yet!
Found while researching something else in "Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, 1905 (Necrology):
Both falcons have been there off and on for a few days now. And today, there is a hollowed out space. I'm really hoping for some eggs soon!
Please consider sharing - I have recently seen people feeding bread to the geese. It is very bad for them.
