We believe in the principles of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love. Carter Ashton Jenkens, the 18-year-old son of a minister, had been a student at Rutgers University, New Jersey, where he joined Chi Phi Fraternity. When he transferred to Richmond College in the Fall of 1900, he sought companions to take the place of the Chi Phi brothers he had left behind. He found five men who had already been drawn into a bond of friendship and urged them to join him in applying for a charter of Chi Phi at Richmond College. The request for a charter was forwarded to Chi Phi only to meet with refusal. Chi Phi felt that Richmond College was too small for the establishment of a Chi Phi chapter. Wanting to maintain their fellowship, Carter Ashton Jenkens, Benjamin Gaw, William Carter, William Wallace, Thomas Wright, and William Phillips decided to form their own local fraternity. - Founded on November 1, 1901, at Richmond College. - Over the past two decades, SigEp has recruited more men than any other collegiate fraternity. Currently, over 14,000 undergraduates are members, making SigEp the largest national fraternity. - Maintains the highest first-year member retention rate, over 90%, of any national fraternity. - More than 280,000 lifetime members rank SigEp in the top four among national fraternities. - Governed by the Grand Chapter, which is composed of undergraduate delegates from each chapter, District Governors, and the National Board of Directors.

Though it’s not the way we wanted our school year to end it has still been record setting for the brothers of mass alpha. We adhered to our three principals of virtue diligence and brotherly love and truly created a strong bond between us. We grew our chapter by 166% which shows just how much we have gained since the start of the year. We can’t wait to be back on campus for next year where we will continue our growth and strengthen our fraternity. Stay tuned to see how we are continuing our chapter virtually and staying active and connected. Finally from all the brothers of SigEp remember to practice social distancing and wash your hands in order to stay safe out there. Dam proud! @ Amherst, Massachusetts

Last but not least is me Quinn McCarron! I am a freshman political science major at UMass and I am vp of communications for SigEp. Outside of SigEp I am in Spikeball club and I go to every hockey game dressed as a reindeer. My favorite part of SigEp if how devoted everyone is to making themselves and their fellow brothers better. My advice would be don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to people around you I found it’s the easiest way to make new friends.

Leading up to the spring semester we are going to begin a profile on each of our e-board members starting today with president Ryan Gibbions.

Ryan is a mechanical engineering major and a junior at UMass. Here are his answers to a few questions about himself.

When did you join SigEp?

I joined SigEp during spring rush of 2019 when I was a second semester sophomore as I had just transferred to UMass.

What positions do you have in SigEp?

Within SigEp, I am the President as well as the Sound Body Chair. I also am involved in various programming committees as they are needed.

What are some thing you do outside of SigEp?

Outside of the fraternity, I am a member of steering committee for UMass For the Kids, a student-run philanthropy organization. I am also a member of the UMass Powerlifting team and American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

What do you like most about SigEp?

What I like most about SigEp is that all brothers are extremely close friends who can count on eachother for virtually anything and talk to eachother about anything, whether it be extremely personal or not. I love that we are a tight-knit group that stays very close together.

What advice would you give to freshmen or your peers in general?

Advice that I would provide to incoming freshman or my peers is to get involved and put yourself out there. Becoming very involved with clubs and activities at UMass has made my experience exponentially better than that of my prior school where I was not as involved. Not only will you make friends and have fun, you can make valuable connections and learn knowledge that you can use throughout your life this way.

This past Saturday many of our bothers participated in Mass Impact Day, a day dedicated to giving back to the local community. We had the pleasure of spending time at the Ronald McDonald House in Springfield - a foundation whose goal is to provide housing to families whose children are seeking medical care in the Western Massachusetts area. Great work men!

During the last full week of September, Greek organizations practice and celebrate hazing prevention as well as what it means to foster a safe and productive learning environment. These morals and ideals run deep in what it truly means to be a SigEp - and it's important these ideas and concepts remain in discussions well beyond this week alone. Last March, UMass Amherst and SigEp Mass Alpha hosted Rae-Anne Gruver and Evelyn Piazza, two mother's who tragically lost their sons to fraternal hazing, to discuss an issue that unfortunately continues and often goes unnoticed. We are so thankful for these two wonderful women and their families for helping to instill lasting change in Greek life.

Thank you for sharing your story at our Conclave.
We are all in this together, fighting to create a safe culture in all organizations.

On Thursday, Rae Ann and Jim and Evelyn Piazza spoke at the Sigma Phi Epsilon Conclave conference about Tim and Max and share their stories.

We are pleased with their willingness and desire to make a change across all of their chapters.

We are thankful for them “taking a leap” to educate their men on the importance of hazing prevention! 💜💙 #FlyHighMax #LiveLikeTim #StoptheHazing #SigEpConclave
