Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management

Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management An internationally recognized Sport Management Program housed within the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst. We are proud of our more than 40 year history as an innovative educator in the sport management industry.

We are among only a handful of sport management programs based in a professional business school and our curriculum values theory and experiential industry experience in equal measure. Further, our faculty are internationally recognized for their cutting-edge research and industry experience. We consider ourselves the business school for sports business. Upon graduation, our students join an extended professional family of over 6,000 McCormack alumni. Representing every sector and stratum of the sport management industry, they offer their fellow graduates and current McCormack students unparalleled career networking, industry intelligence, and internship/job placements. In 2010 we renamed our program in honor of Mark H. McCormack, the founder of IMG, the industry’s leading sport, entertainment, and media agency. We house the Mark H. McCormack archive, a one-of-a-kind repository that chronicles four decades of milestones in the sport management industry. Like our namesake, we have continued to learn much from that ground-breaking past. Be it research or teaching, we are driven and inspired through continuous innovation in the sport industry.

We're taking a moment to showcase recent #UMassJournalism graduate Sarah Jacobs '20 and say well done! We asked her to give advice to our Journalism students. This is what she had to say: "Practice, practice, practice! Practice your writing skills, speaking and communication skills, and broadcast skills. The likelihood that you'll be good at something on the first try is slim, but with practice and determination, you will be great. And don't be afraid to reach out to professors! The journalism department is amazing and wants you to succeed more than anything."

Sarah was involved in the Women in Sports Media Symposium, UMass Women Swimming & Diving and UMass Women in Sport Management - WISM. Her favorite UMass memory was getting to use the broadcast studio. "I'm very interested in pursuing a career in broadcast sports journalism, getting that real hands-on experience was so incredible and such an awesome opportunity."

Since graduating, she now has the opportunity to write about the Patriots for Sports Illustrated! She has been dreaming of becoming a broadcast sports journalist since middle school, so her longterm goal is to be an on-air anchor covering Boston sports for NESN or ESPN.

#UMassSeniorSeries: Meet Madison Perlmutter, Class of 2020

"I was most excited about the sports management program being a completely different experience than I’m used to. Being raised in the South, I didn’t know what the Northeast was about. I didn’t even know this major existed until I started applying for colleges. Both my parents are bankers, and my sister is an accountant, and I knew I didn’t want an office job, so being able to see my dreams come to life by enrolling here was the coolest thing ever. Being able to work with the athletics and sports management programs have brought everything full circle, and really set in stone that I want to work in sports.

This department is really keen on diversity and inclusion. We have a Diversity and Inclusion in Sports class, and all of our professors research in that realm. When I joined the Association of Diversity in Sports, I didn’t really know anything about it. Now it’s opened my eyes to a whole new world, and I want to end up in a diversity and inclusion part of sports. My dream is to make sports more accessible to play and to watch, and my fairy tale is to become a billionaire and create my own non-profit that brings sports equipment to underdeveloped areas and countries, making it sustainable for them to be able to play.

This department also really emphasizes family. Between the students, the clubs, and the faculty and staff, we’re a really close-knit group. My neighbors five houses up the street and five houses across the street are all Sports Management students; we eat, breathe, sleep together. Our professors are absolutely amazing, and always have their doors open. We’re each other’s biggest support group.

I actually just accepted a job offer with the New England Revolution as a sales representative. I hope to work in their multicultural department, helping to sell tickets for their Pride nights, Hispanic nights, Brazillian nights, and be that bridge between sales and diversity and inclusion."

🎓 Madison Perlmutter
🎓 Major: Sport Management in the Isenberg School of Management

Madison is the president of the Association of Diversity in Sports, treasurer of Women in Sports Management, a creative services intern with Massachusetts Athletics, an ambassador for the Isenberg School of Management and McCormack Department of Sports Management, and the captain of the Polo Team.
