Is there anyone around this summer who would like to consult on the UMass Renaissance Garden Project? It is a few hours for 3-4 days of paid work to identify the herbal plants in the garden and help guide the planting of new herbs and vegetables. You don't need to do the planting, just consult on what to plant etc. If you are interested, please let me know at [email protected]. Here is the background on the garden:

Sarah Berquist receives (another) teaching award!

UMass Instructor and Program Coordinator of the Sustainable Food and Farming B.S. degree program in the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, Sarah Berquist, was chosen as the 2019 recipient of the UMass Distinguished Community Engagement Award for teaching. According to UMass Provost, Dr. John McCarthy, this award recognizes “individuals within our campus community for their outstanding contributions to engagement locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally.”

Sarah was recently recognized for her teaching excellence by the Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society.

Dr. Wesley Autio, Director of the UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture, who attended the awards ceremony at the Annual Faculty Honors Dinner said "I am delighted to see one of our own recognized for her work by receiving one of the most important campus awards in addition to the one she received from Phi Kappa Phi. Sarah is an outstanding member of our faculty and is very much deserving of these recognitions."

Mass Renaissance Center Garden Project

The UMass Renaissance Garden (just off campus) is looking for a gardener this summer who has Work Study. Here is the job description....
If you are looking for a job this summer in Amherst, the UMass Renaissance Center is looking for someone to plant and manage their "Shakespeare Era" vegetable and herb garden.

The garden was designed by a former Stockbridge student and has been managed each year by a Stockie. Here is the story on the garden: https://renaissancegarden.org/

The job will be 10 - 20 hours a week depending on the week (less hours early in the spring/summer and more later as the garden needs more care). In the past we have grown some of the seedlings alongside the plants for the Student Farm on campus. If you can begin work over the next few weeks Amanda Brown and I can help get you started seeding but this is not required.

If you are interested, please contact Ellen Carroll-McLane .

The U.S. Has More Female Farmers Than Ever

"Over the last five years, the number of male farmers fell, while the number of women rose: Female producers now make up 36 percent of farmers, a 27 percent increase from 2012. Now, 56 percent of farms have at least one female producer, although only 38 percent have a female primary producer, the person who makes the most decisions on the farm."

And other key takeaways from the latest Census of Agriculture.
