International Scholars Program student Margot Powers is having a fantastic time studying in Belgium: “Studying abroad [in Belgium] has given me a chance to drastically improve my language skills, as all of my classes are in French. I have also been able to make cultural connections through my friendships with the people I've met here—both Belgians and other international students. I have learned how to analyze my own cultural biases and how my home could improve…I'm excited to see what the rest of the year has in store for me and to bring the lessons I've learned back to UMass.” Find out more about ISP at: www.umass.edu/honors/curriculum/opportunities/international

International Scholars Program (ISP) student Sarah Cotton is currently studying in Jordan: “Being a part of the International Scholars Program has not only allowed me to experience a different culture while living in a new part of the world, but it has also given me the opportunity to pursue my academic goals. By analyzing the health and humanitarian response to the Syrian refugee crisis, I am gaining insights into real-world applications of my academic interests in global health by visiting organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UNWRA…Next year, with the support of faculty at UMass, I intend to translate this project into my honors thesis. I truly believe that the International Scholars Program is an unparalleled opportunity which allowed me to carefully consider what goals I wanted to accomplish abroad, which is helping me prepare for my senior year and life after graduation.” Find out more about ISP at: www.umass.edu/honors/curriculum/opportunities/international

UMass’s Churchill Scholarship awardee, Edridge D’Souza ’19, is currently at Cambridge University, England, living the life of a scholar and scientist, gentleman and squire. “I’ve had the opportunity to see new places, forge new connections, scientific research …,” says Edridge, “[and] explore a single scientific topic in depth, but also the freedom to enjoy all aspects of life in Cambridge and in the U.K. This year represents a great opportunity for learning, growth … I am greatly thankful to the Winston Churchill Foundation.” Learn more about the Churchill Scholarship and other opportunities at https://www.umass.edu/onsa/

International Scholars Program student Isabelle Domingos is studying abroad this year in Jordan. Isabelle shared her insights about her experience so far: “Hello, or اهلا! I am a junior in the Commonwealth Honors College pursuing a BDIC in geopolitical studies and a B.A. in Middle Eastern studies. Through the support of CHC and the International Scholars Program (ISP), I am currently studying abroad in Amman, Jordan, at the CET Intensive Arabic Language Program. CET upholds a full-time Arabic-only language pledge, where English is ممنوع (forbidden). Adjusting to a foreign language and culture has been challenging, but the skills and knowledge I acquired as a scholar in ISP have proved to be invaluable in overcoming that. The experience has allowed me to learn Middle Eastern history, culture, religion, and politics from within the region and completely in Arabic … I am able to travel in the region and experience the things I am learning, [and] discussing these topics with native Arabic speakers that I meet along the way … accessing and understanding cultures through language is the best way to conduct diplomatic relations and mitigate international conflicts. I have so much more to learn, and I am excited to see what the year brings before I make my way back to CHC.”
Come to an upcoming ISP Pizza Info Session! Nov. 20, 6 p.m., Oak Residence Hall; Dec. 5, 7 p.m., Sycamore Residence Hall.

International Scholars Program (ISP) student Phoebe Gelbard ’20 is currently studying abroad:
"I am a junior studying International Development (BDIC) and Natural Resources Conservation in Chiang Mai, Thailand, through the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC). Since August 2018, I have been living here, taking classes at Chiang Mai University (including Thai language and a Thai cooking class where I learned that Pad Thai is much more difficult to perfect than I ever anticipated), and exploring the region of Southeast Asia. From the people to the food to the geographic and cultural landscapes, Thailand is a beautiful, diverse, and welcoming place that I am fortunate to call home for the semester and, hopefully, beyond these five months."

Maria Girardin ’20, currently studying abroad in Spain via the International Scholars Program, writes, "With the USAC program, I have had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, and to amazing places just around Alicante, such as the Guadalest waterfalls and the Castle of St. Barbara. I also am living with a Spanish family, which not only has forced me to practice my Spanish all the time, but also has aided me in understanding Spanish culture (traditional food, later meal times, religious and political views, etc.). The USAC program also set me up with two jobs: teaching English as a tutor and for a Kindergarten class at a school. Both of these jobs have been not only challenging and fun, but also great experience for me as an aspiring speech language pathologist."
