Massachusetts Traffic Safety Coalition

Respect the safety of people walking.

When driving, follow the rules of the road.
• Stop at Crosswalks — Massachusetts law says that drivers must yield at a crosswalk if a pedestrian is walking on that half of the road or is within 10 feet of crossing that half of the road.
• Obey Speed Limits — Make sure you follow posted speed limits.
• Don’t Pass Other Stopped Cars at a crosswalk — They may be stopped to allow people to cross.

In Massachusetts, about a quarter of traffic deaths involve a person walking.

• Don’t drive distracted — its against the law to text! Using apps, emailing, surfing the web, or playing games on your phone takes your eyes off the road.
• Look out for pedestrians at all times. Take extra care when you’re in areas where people walk like town centers, school zones, parks, playgrounds, and bus stops.
• Slow down when approaching a crosswalk.
• Make eye contact with pedestrians. Just because you see them doesn’t mean they see you.

MSP's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section Receives Leadership Award

Today, the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES) received a leadership award from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in recognition of Massachusetts having the lowest commercial vehicle fatality rate in the nation. This is the second consecutive year that the Massachusetts State Police CVES -- commonly known as the Truck Team -- has achieved that distinction.

In addition to patrolling the state's highways to ensure that truckers are complying with state traffic laws, the team also enforces federal motor carrier laws and regulations, including weight restrictions and vehicle maintenance requirements.

The award was presented by Curtis L. Thomas, Regional Field Administrator, Eastern Service Center, of the FMCSA. Also present was Richard Bates, Division Administrator from FMCSA, and Matthew Poirier, FMCSA State Program Specialist for Massachusetts. Colonel Richard McKeon, Lieutenant Colonel Edward Amodeo, commander of the Division of Field Services, and Major Richard Prior, commander of the Tactical Operations Section, were in attendance to accept the award with State Police CVES members.
