Academic Advising for the Kinesiology Department at UMass Amherst Kinesiology is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the science of human movement.
Its four basic elements – biochemistry, biomechanics, motor control, and physiology – are integrated to allow kinesiologists to address a wide variety of questions. In recent years, the field of kinesiology has evolved toward less emphasis on sport and a much stronger focus on an understanding of human movement and the role of physical activity and exercise in health and disease. To those ends, kinesiologists use tools from molecular biology, neuroscience, engineering, medicine, and computer science to work on unique problems in a diverse array of settings that include laboratories, hospitals, health and wellness centers, and field environments. - See more at: http://www.umass.edu/sphhs/kinesiology#sthash.rNPQO7qo.dpuf
Mission: To generate new knowledge and educate society, within and beyond the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as to the scientific principles that underlie the role of movement in attaining optimal human health and well-being. By our study of the structural and functional interactions between movement and health, we will: promote the understanding of benefits of physical activity; provide high quality education for undergraduate and graduate students; extend the boundaries of knowledge through innovative and integrative research; translate research results to practical applications beneficial to society. The Department of Kinesiology is committed to promoting diversity. - See more at: http://www.umass.edu/sphhs/kinesiology/about-us/mission#sthash.cTV7DTkc.dpuf

If you are not a club member but still want to attend, it is $2. KIN majors, don't be afraid to stop by peer advising hours if you have any questions during the first week of classes!!
Interested in getting involved in research? Taking a class with a professor who does research is a great way to bridge the gap. Consider taking Dr. Alhassan's Kin 346 Clinical & Public Health Implications of Obesity course in Spring 2018. It also counts as a kin elective!
Improving children's health is the focus of Sofiya Alhassan's research in the department of kinesiology. It's this impact that she believes draws students to her field, including many female undergraduates. To these students she tells an important message: get involved early and don't be afraid of making mistakes. Watch her UMass Amherst #WomeninScience story below and learn how you can get involved at umass.edu/sphhs/kinesiology. UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences
