UMass Student Government Association

UMass Student Government Association The Student Government Association is the official representative of the UMass student body to the administration. Active members of the SGA work directly with administrators and are even granted broad power to change policy on this campus through a legally binding trustee document known as the Wellman Document.
(11)

Other than power to make substantive change to campus, active members are also responsible for the two million dollars in the Student Activities Trust Fund (SATF). The SATF is allocated by the SGA to all Registered Student Organizations and Agencies through the Ways and Means Committee. Being an active member of the SGA is a great experience for any UMass student. Other than making a killer resume, the SGA drives students to act as leaders in the UMass community. Active members of the SGA do more than play politics – we represent our peers to make UMass even better. The greatest part about the SGA is that students don’t just work on policy initiatives and campus campaigns; we design, run, and implement policy initiatives and campus campaigns. Active members also gain real live experience working directly with administrators and learn how to change an establishment from within. Most importantly, the quality of the student experience is enhanced when their needs are made a priority, therefore the SGA works to ensure that student representation is at the forefront of decision makers’ agenda and are devoted to putting Students First. Structure The Student Government Association is structured like the United States Government, with three branches of government. Each branch has main responsibilities, but they often work together to better student life. The Senate is mainly in charge of the $2 million Student Activities Trust Fund (SATF), which is allocated to all UMass RSO’s and SGA Agencies like student Bridges and the Student Legal Services Office. The Executive’s major focus is representing the general student body and work directly with the Administration on campus policy initiatives. The Executive is also in charge of approving new RSO’s and signing off on any RSO account transfers. The Judiciary acts as the Supreme Court of the SGA. It is great experience for students, but is also a great resource for holding SGA officers accountable. SGA election for Senate and House Councils take place in the fall and for President, Student Trustee and Area Government in the spring.

Today is officially SGA’s Interim Cabinet last day! For the last six months, the SGA was able to remain operative and accessible to students while we faced a transition to remote learning during a worldwide pandemic. Thank you for bearing with us as we navigated these uncertain times. We have been truly honored to represent students over the last six months. As we depart from our roles, we wish the next cabinet the best of luck and look forward to seeing what’s next for the SGA! Sincerely, SGA Interim Cabinet 2020

Hi everyone! My name is Suthaney and I'm working on a project to implement free menstrual products in all public bathrooms at UMass Amherst; because we know that menstrual products are a necessity, not a luxury. You may have heard of us on Instagram, @projectperiod.umass! We've been working with the UMass Administration for months, and we are ready to launch free period products as soon as we have the funding, as early as Fall 2020! We've launched a GoFundMe to fund the free period products, and we would greatly appreciate it if you could donate $3-5 or share the link to support this really important mission! 4/5 students who menstruate have had to skip class at one point due to not having adequate access to menstrual products- even worse, there are many low-income students who chronically cannot afford menstrual products, and providing them in public bathrooms can help alleviate this issue for them. We all know how stressful it can be to start your period in public without access to pads. This is your chance to help those who are caught unprepared or simply cannot afford the pink tax that makes menstrual products way too expensive. You wouldn't expect to pay for toilet paper in a public bathroom, right? Thank you for any and all support, and remember to follow @projectperiod.umass for more information!
Hi! My name is Samantha Docteur and I'm currently an intern working for Fair Shot for All. Fair Shot is recruiting summer interns to fight income inequality across Massachusetts. To apply, please fill out the application below and email your resume to [email protected]. bit.ly/2IcN4Cb
Hi UMass SGA, Happy Holidays! I hope all is well. I am reaching out to you because we would like to offer UMass SGA our ITTF approved table tennis products. Great for club use and competitions! A little background about Kinson, Kinson has been popular among players throughout Asia, Australia, Germany, and the U.K. since its establishment in 1972. Kinson is reputable for their high standard and expert design; a competitor next to Stiga, Butterfly, and Joola. https://www.kinsonusa.com/ Don't forget to use our promo code: KINSON2018. Remember, a portion of your purchase will also be donated to the Special Olympics. Thank you again for your time, and feel free to check out our website. Let us know if you have any questions! Best, Justin Lew Co-Head of Business Operations [email protected] (510) 427.2363
I saw the daily collegian article about the recent vote for the referendum that will be held from December 4th-7th regarding the increase of the STFA fee. The article states that a "yes" vote from 5% of the student body would approve the increase, however, it does not mention what constitutes a "no" vote. Would this also be a vote by 5% of the student body, or would it go by majority at that point? Additionally, will low-income students be exempt from the drastic increase in the fee? Thank you!
What are you interested in? There is probably something for that! If you don't know or have any other questions feel free to message the Umass Student Government Association page! #Classof2021
