UMass Journalism Department This page is here for discussion about Journalism and the UMass Journalism program. We welcome ideas and thoughts from everyone but as in most social media circles we want to keep our discussions on point and away from name-calling and personal attacks.

Journalism education was first introduced at UMass in 1915 by Robert Wilson Neal, one of the founding members of the Assn. for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Instruction was offered through courses by several professors in the English Department from 1946-1970. Prof. Howard Ziff facilitated the move of journalism into a separate degree program called Journalistic Studies (later called the Journalism Department) in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Early chairs included Prof. Ziff, Prof. Larry Pinkham and Prof. Jim Boylan. Norm Sims was chair for 13 years, ending in 2005. In 2005, the Journalism Department was moved into the Department of Communication in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and its status changed to a program within that Department. Since 2005, Prof. Karen List has been Director of the Journalism Program. In 2013, Journalism was returned to department status and Prof. Kathy Forde was hired to start running the department in Fall 2014. The Journalism Department also moved into the Integrative Learning Center in the summer of 2014. As of Fall 2017, Prof. Brian McDermott is the Journalism Department Chair.

Mission: "We draw on proud journalistic traditions so our students can tell the stories of our community bravely, ethically and creatively." Brian McDermott, Department Chair

We asked #UMassJournalism alum Liz Strzepa My NBC5 '15, anchor/reporter for My NBC5, how life is after UMass in this week's #MondayMemo!

"Journalists are essential to maintaining our democracy — and I think 2020 has proved just how critically important our profession is. Now more than ever we need to hold the powerful accountable, seek truth and report it and establish trust between the organizations we report for and the communities we serve. Though reporting hasn’t been easy these past twelve months, my job has never felt more important than it does right now," said Liz.

We asked #UMassJournalism alum Jonathan Kermah '20, production assistant for The Ringer, how life is after UMass in this week's #MondayMemo!

"When I first began the UMass Journalism program, I thought the only route in the journalism field was being a writer/reporter for a newspaper or website. But four years later, I’m happy to say I was flat out wrong. With technology, what we call journalism and media is forever changing and that’s a great thing. Follow what you love and never leave your curiosity behind whether you work behind the camera, fact check or produce podcasts," said Jonathan.

In this week's #MondayMemo, we asked #UMassJournalism alum Jackson Cote, MassLive Reporter '19, how life is after UMass!

"Working as a breaking news reporter in 2020 has been an adventure through and through. I've covered numerous protests, allegations of abuse at a prison, a statewide environmental crisis and more. Despite the crazy hours and breakneck speed, though, I love my work, and I wouldn't be where I am without my education in the UMass Journalism Department. A highlight of my job is reporting on a story and frequently seeing fellow alumni at other news outlets covering the same issue. I know the University prepared us well," said Jackson.

Columnist Joanna Buoniconti: Prioritizing physical well-being over mental

"Due to being disabled in general, there are only a select few of healthy coping mechanisms that we can rely on. Most of us can't physically exercise, so we lose out on the endorphins that are released during those activities. We have to find creative ways to keep our mental health afloat, and all too often it comes down to a choice between our physical and mental well-being," said #UMassJournalism student Joanna Buoniconti '21.

This week's Monday Memo kicks off with #UMassJournalism alum Nia Decaille '15, SEO editor at The New York Times, who says, "There are no digital journalists, just journalists. Talking about journalism as two separate entities – print and digital – is outdated. Many social media managers, data analysts, operations editors and SEO wonks have reporting experience or studied journalism or both. Those digital skills have been pertinent in helping legacy news organizations meet the challenges of adopting a subscription model and exploring new ways to scale readership."

"The willingness to become social media evangelists or product liaisons in our newsroom shouldn't come at the expense of being seen and respected as journalists," said Nia.
