The Boltwood Project The BOLTWOOD project is a service learning organization dedicated to engaging with people of varying abilities and backgrounds. We are a community both on and off campus and welcome all to be a part of our organization!

Good morning Boltwood!
Come to the campus center between 10-4 today to help spread the word for inclusion! Today is Spread the Word: Inclusion Day, a time where we pledge to making ourselves more inclusive and help others to understand the importance! We are all a community so let’s work today to continue increasing positivity and decrease negativity, ableism, and exclusion!

Spring 2020 is a great time to join a service learning organization devoted to advocacy, learning, and most importantly: FUN! New year, new you? What better way to start than by coming by our interview night Tuesday 1/28 (you only have to come to one), to learn about this awesome organization that works with the community all around the Western Mass area. Boltwood works with schools, group homes, nursing homes, event centers, and many more places to create community connections with some really great people. Message me with any questions! I'm more than happy to talk about it 🙂

Thanks again to Life is Good for being our first seminar! Don't forget: 10% of the company's net profits go to helping kids in need. The mission of The Life is Good Kids Foundation is spreading the power of optimism to help kids heal! (: Find out more at: https://content.lifeisgood.com/kidsfoundation/

Last week, Playmaker guide Alicia spoke with students at UMass about how they can bring the Playmaker practice to their lives as students and in their careers. They also shared #SomethingGood with us, helping us get close to 1 million shares!

Interviews will begin Tuesday 6-8, September 10 and continue to Wednesday 6-8 , September 11 in Goodell 5th floor lounge and the connecting Bernie Dallas room. You do not need to come both nights for interviews. Formal attire or a resume are not necessary. Just come with your passion for service learning! Although the style will be interviews, we are just looking for enthusiastic students who can commit to a two credit course that includes site visits. The Boltwood Project is close to the hearts of many! The UMass students, site participants, community partners, and more gain life long memories and friendships through our organization. The purpose of The Boltwood Project is two-fold: to provide additional opportunities for recreation/social-oriented activities and general skill development for people and children with varying abilities. It is truly an amazing program that has had a huge positive impact on many lives.

Once again, we will be participating in the UMass gives fundraiser! The money we raise will be used to further educate over 150 students during our three-weekend seminars and to buy fun supplies and healthy foods we bring to our sites where we reach over 200 participants of all ages. We would really appreciate any donations to support this program and to allow for it to continue being so amazing and impactful!

Donations will be accepted and appreciated at any time, but on April 30th from 1:00-2:00 pm we will be having a power hour where the group with the most UNIQUE donors within that hour will receive an additional $2,000.

Here is the link to donate! We thank you in advance

UMass Amherst | Give

Few things make us happier than fostering friendships and socialization, increasing people's confidence, and promoting an all-inclusive environment for people of all abilities.

Thankfully, we get to do this every week through The Boltwood Project! Every week UMass students go to different sites in Western Massachusetts to build relationships with people of varying abilities and backgrounds. The Boltwood Project is a community service-learning course at Umass Amherst, and it is the oldest registered student organization here. It is also a registered non-profit! The purpose of The Boltwood Project is two-fold: to provide additional opportunities for recreation/social-oriented activities and general skill development for people and children with varying abilities.

Our funds will be used to further educate over 150 students during our three-weekend seminars throughout the semester where we bring accomplished speakers with a unique perspective on disability to Umass and welcome all to attend. The fundraised money will also go directly to the supplies and food we bring to our sites/community partners where we reach over 200 participants of all ages. Some of our sites include Farren Care Center (an assisted living home), Berkshire Hill Music Academy, elementary and middle schools in Holyoke and Amherst, and various group homes in the community. Increased support will provide more resources to better ourselves and the Pioneer Valley community, and we deeply appreciate anything you can give to our non-profit that positively touches the lives of hundreds of people in the community. Here is the link to our UMassGives page to donate,https://umass.scalefunder.com/gday/giving-day/4514/department/7954 you can also find some pictures and more information! If possible to make the absolute most of your donation, donating any time in between 12 pm and 1 pm on Friday will help us win an RSO competition! This is our "power hour" and if we gain the highest number of unique donors during this hour we receive an additional $2,000 dollars! Have a lovely day, and thank you so much for reading this email!

UMass Civic Engagement & Service-Learning

The Boltwood Project held its first of three spring semester seminars on Sunday, March 5th in Hasbrouck. Over 100 students attended the 4-hour seminar on the theme of “Disability and Independence,” planned and facilitated by Boltwood student leaders. The group viewed the documentary film “Life Animated,” a fascinating documentary on the efforts of a young man with Autism to be independent. The film was the catalyst for small group discussions on the ways Boltwood students could support people with disabilities to achieve independence and happiness.

The Boltwood Project partners with 22 local organizations serving community members with disabilities. It has been part of UMass for over 40 years and is overseen by UMass CESL.

Today is National Spread the Word to End the R-Word Campaign! Join Best Buddies, Autism Speaks, and The Boltwood Project at the Campus Center and pledge yourself to end the use of the derogatory R-word!

Super duper important quick announcement, and it would mean a lot if you could give this a quick read!

TODAY, March 1st, is the official Spread the Word to End the Word Day! Aimed at ending the use of the R-Word, the campaign seeks to raise awareness about how damaging the degrading term can be, as well as collect pledges to end the use of the word.

Having worked with Best Buddies for two short years now, I can honestly say that people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities are far and away the most compassionate and caring demographic I have ever met. Nobody deserves to be put down, even more so when many are unable to defend themselves.
As such, Best Buddies UMass Amherst has TEAMED UP with Pi Kappa Phi - UMass, Autism Speaks U University of Massachusetts Amherst, and The Boltwood Project to take over the Campus Center and raise awareness, encouraging people to pledge to end the use of the word!

YOU TOO can pledge online and join the thousands of others who have promised to actively work towards becoming more compassionate and considerate people.

Pledge online here! http://www.r-word.org/r-word-pledge.aspx

And thank you for helping make the world a better place, one word at a time!

For more information on any of the organizations, please visit their pages! They're incredible people doing incredible things.
