Because we all need something to make us smile: that's UMass Amherst lawyer-alum (and one-time SGA President) Zac Broughton and his fiancée Lauren Erickson (who is currently a PhD student at the University). Go Zac and Lauren! Go UMass!

Photos of the week: Huge congrats to Zac Broughton '14, '16 MEd and current PhD student Lauren Erickson '17 MEd on their recent engagement!

Zac says, "Because we both either went to UMass or are currently enrolled, and because we met because of UMass, we thought it was the perfect place to capture our engagement."

So much great advice on surviving the Semester of Zoom from the experts: your peers.

This week my kids started remote schooling in Easthampton. One is in middle school and the other is in high school. It’s pretty stressful but they’re glad that they won’t be in face-to-face classes. As they say, “Mom, kids don’t know how to social...

This panel TODAY (Thursday 9/10) looks to be of great interest for those of you contemplating careers in environmental law and sustainability.

How does the environmental justice movement include and exclude the lived experiences and voices of marginalized communities of color, and which issues does the movement tend to focus on and overlook? We can learn more about this by looking more closely at the ways in which food, climate, and farming intersect with race -- especially in urban cities and communities with higher populations of people of color.

This panel of experts in the environmental and food justice movements will talk about their work on creating equitable food systems, celebrating and reclaiming indigenous food culture, food security and the climate, and working with youth on health. The panelists discuss these topics through an intersectional lens connecting race to community, education, and the preservation of oral history.*

Panelists include:
Olivia Aguilar, Mount Holyoke College
Neftali Duran, Holyoke Food and Equity Collective Andrew Laurion, Urban Resources * Garden Economics (URGE), Springfield Lorena Moreno, Riquezas del Campo Cooperative Farm Jose Marinez, Riquezas del Campo Cooperative Farm

*We will have Spanish translation of the discussion

It’s no secret that Black people are seriously underrepresented in the legal profession, making up just 5% of lawyers (far less their 13% share of the US population). As a result, the law school experience can be challenging for Black students. We’ve invited three UMass Amherst alums who are currently in law school to share their experiences and advice.

Thursday, Sept. 17th, 7pm
All UMass Amherst students and alums welcome to attend. Registration required: https://tinyurl.com/lawschoolingwhileblack

All these discussions are open and free to attend.

"Getting involved at this level is how I can make a difference. We need to be supporting local leaders who believe in productive governing, a way forward beyond the petty politics of today. People who will actually stand up for the values in our Constitution and support our communities, not just talk about it."

A message from our Judiciary:

Hey everyone! My name is Cynthia Murphy, and I am the Chief Justice of the Student Government Judiciary. Our role in Student Government is essentially the same as the Supreme Court in the Federal Government. We hear cases on by-law and constitutional violations by other branches of the SGA or Registered Student Organizations. Today we are posting the application to become an Associate Justice. There are currently four Justices, including myself, the (Associate) Chief Justice, and our two current Associate Justices, and we are looking forward to inviting three more people to join us. If accepted to this position, you would serve for the remainder of your time at UMass, unless you decide to resign. We ask that you complete your application by the end of the first day of class, August 24th. If you have any questions about the position or application, you can reach out to us at [email protected], and we will respond as soon as we can.

COVID-19 and Law School Applications
Wednesday, July 8th at 4 pm
Join us for a discussion of how the pandemic is impacting law school applications for the Fall 2020 application cycle. We’ll talk about the LSAT, grades, application essays, and letters of recommendation, and how each of these might be affected by the shutdowns and related changes. We’ll also discuss what “visiting” law schools will look like in the Fall, and how best to connect with admissions officials in a virtual world. Open to all UMass Amherst students and alums, but particularly geared toward those who are applying this Fall. Registration required—registered participants will receive a Zoom link the day of the event. Find the registration link at prelaw.umass.edu/events
