The Diet for a Cooler Planet meal was a smashing success. The chefs created an incredible meal with our silvopastured lamb and perennial root crop Jerusalem Artichokes and many other local and climate positive ingredients. A reminder that we don't have to sacrifice eating well to stabilize the climate. Thank you student ambassadors from the UMass SFF Student Group who talked to students about how our diet impacts the climate and took a survey's to get feedback on the food and event. UMass Dining for organizing and hosting this groundbreaking meal. Also a special thanks to all the farmers who grew the food especially UMass Student Farm and Amanda Brown , UMass Carbon Farming Initiative and Nikki Burton for being our all star shepherd and UMass Amherst Permaculture for organizing and harvesting over 150 pounds of jerusalem artichokes from our farm and UMass GardenShare and Sarah Berquist for organizing and tabling at the event. Heres to many more meals to come.

Continuing a tradition that dates back 150 years, UMass Amherst students helped plant the 2017 Class Tree on campus yesterday. This year's tree is a Japanese elm grown from a cutting taken from the campus's national champion Japanese elm, planted from seed in 1890 and standing today near the southeast corner of South College. #umass2017

For most people who work with trees, Dr. Michael Dirr needs no introduction. He is the author of numerous books on woody plants that have become staples on our desks. He also has some New England roots, as he earned his PhD from UMass. His fingers are always on the pulse of the nursery industry, scouting for new introductions, and having himself introduced 15 trees into commerce.

He has established several arboreta, consults on tree selection, and has penned tree guides for many campuses. The green industry has tremendously benefited from his keen interest in evaluating trees and his enthusiasm to share it with us.

The utility arboretum is quickly nearing completion. Our local utility, Eversource, installed poles yesterday, and we hope to plant trees within a few weeks (in time for our Arbor Day celebration on 4/22/17). The purpose of the arboretum is to educate arborists, consumers, and students about selecting appropriate trees to plant near utility wires. Avoiding conflicts between trees and wires keeps trees healthy and reduces power outages.

There is a lot happening these days at the ALC. This week student farmers planted a small Orchard, worked on a native pollinator garden, worked on completion of a greenhouse and prepared for the arrival of their first flock of meat birds. This is just some of this week's activity. Come visit us to see all of the wonderful projects happening this season by many other groups too!
