Caribbean Spanish is the most spoken Spanish in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. How do speakers of Caribbean Spanish in Massachusetts view the Spanish they speak and the Spanish spoken by others? Do speakers have ideas about what Spanish is "best"? Spanish in the U.S. students Marília Leme, Bekah Forrest, Eliza Stewart-Smith and Erik Bratland took a look at some of these questions this semester, and found some very interesting results! Tomorrow Barbara Zecchi is the invited co-host of PLEIBÉRICOS 6 - Spanish Cinema special event (Thursday December 10th 6pm GMT, 7pm CET)
We are delighted to announce the 6th ‘Pleibéricos’ event, a Spanish Cinema books special.
Pleibéricos is an open, online initiative born in response to the pandemic with the intention of promoting and celebrating new major publications in the rich and diverse field of Iberian Studies at a time when it is difficult to host public in-person events. The hour-long YouTube live sessions cover all geopolitical areas within the Iberian peninsula and aim to be inclusive and representative of a wide range of periods and interests. We have launched titles in areas that include Catalan Food Studies, Spanish and Portuguese cinemas, feminisms and translation, 19th C Spanish culture, race and immigration in Spanish theatre, Transnational Portuguese Studies, Galician literature or Basque politics and art.
In this special event we will talk with the authors of six recent and important publications in the field of Spanish Cinema Studies in conversation with their authors:
Steven Marsh (University of Illinois at Chicago) Spanish Cinema Against Itself: Cosmopolitanism, Experimentation, Militancy (Indiana UP 2020).
Fiona Noble Subversive Spanish Cinema. The Politics of Performance (Bloomsbury 2020).
José Luis Sánchez Noriega (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) (ed) Cine español en la era digital. Emergencias y encrucijadas. (Laertes 2020).
Sarah Thomas (Brown University) Inhabiting the In-Between: Childhood and Cinema in Spain’s Long Transition (UP Toronto 2019).
Tom Whittaker (University of Warwick) The Spanish Quinqui Film: Delinquency, Sound, Sensation (Manchester UP 2020).
The event will be moderator by Pleibéricos coordinators, Santiago Fouz Hernández (Durham University) and Esther Gimeno Ugalde (University of Vienna). Our guest co-moderator this month is Barbara Zecchi (UMass Amherst).
You can follow the event live on YouTube https://youtu.be/lPDd7tT5f1g and participate by asking questions to the authors in the chat. Separate videos and audios of each book presented in our events are also be published weekly in our Instagram TV and Podcast.
Future special Pleibéricos events include a roundtable with publishers and journal editors (2 February), a special on books in Catalan Studies (22 April - in Catalan) and a PGR event (19 May - PhD theses in Iberian Studies).

Translat Library, an open access journal based at our program is accepting submissions. Check it out!

Call for Papers -- We are accepting submissions.

Translat Library is a new open access journal devoted to the literary culture of Europe (1200 to 1600), with an emphasis on vernacular translations, the Romance letters, and the Latin tradition. Translat Library publishes short rigorous essays contributing new documentation and editions of unpublished texts.

Inspired by the sections of notes and manuscript excerpts that were common in nineteenth-century journals, Translat Library seeks to publish notes documenting a discovery, including the identification of a manuscript or an incunable, the source of a text, archival information on an author or a work, the paratexts of a rare edition, the complete or excerpted edition of an unpublished text, and notes on marginalia or on a published but neglected work.

Submissions should not exceed 4,000 words in length. There is no word limit for editions, but introductions to those should not exceed the 4,000-word limit. Accepted submissions are published on a rolling basis.
