The Spanish & Health Certificate at UMass Amherst gives you the language and cultural skills to work with Spanish-speaking patients and communities.

To earn the certificate, you'll complete 4 courses + one experiential component:

✅ A course in advanced Spanish (SPAN 311 or 314)
✅ Spanish for Medical Professions (SPAN 356)
✅ A course in cultural diversity in health care
✅ A course on the Hispanic world (many also count for GenEd!)
✅ A clinical, internship, or service-learning experience in Spanish, or SPAN 456

💡 You may already have classes that count, especially if you're in Nursing, Public Health, Nutrition, or Psych!

It's open to all majors: Nursing, Bio, Public Health, Nutrition, Psych, Kinesiology, pre-med, Spanish, and more.

Ahead of International Translation Day 2026, our very own Professor Regina Galasso, SpanPort Professor and Director of the Edwin C. Gentzler Translation Center, joined The Fabulous 413 hosts Monte Belmonte and Kaliis Smith on New England Public Media for a fantastic conversation about the vibrant translation community right here in Western Mass. They dove into everything from the vital work happening at the Center to career paths, machine translation tools, and the Translated Book Club!
